Day Nine: "It's four am."
*********

When Kai and Isla learned that they were expecting twins it had been a shock. There was some yelling (Kai), some swearing (also Kai), and some hysterical crying (also, also Kai). Now Isla certainly had a reaction of her own but it wasn't nearly as dramatic as her husband's.

At first, Kai was feeling nervous. Twins?? Two children meaning double the parental work especially if they did the common sibling decision of hating each other. There was also the health risk, having twins upped Isla's chance of complications during birth. Though Kai knew his wife was a strong, healthy, young woman it still worried him that he had a chance of losing her.

Nevertheless, he was a father.

And that was the most beautiful thing in the world to him.

When the twins finally came Kai's doubts faded away, he stared into their gorgeous eyes and he felt the strongest feeling of love he could have ever felt as soon as he looked upon their faces. Ash and Aidan were his children. And he was going to do everything in his power to keep them safe.

Which was what led to Kai's next problem. Well, Kai didn't necessarily call it a problem but it made Isla's life eighty percent harder so really she considered it a problem.

"Kai," Isla said slowly and dangerously as she stood in the middle of the hall. "You didn't need to baby-proof everything. Such as this hallway. We aren't living in a vault."

She stared at the five baby gates lining the walls. All she wanted was a glass of water and now she either had to stop to open each one or attempt hurdles.

Kai looked up from where he was attaching cushions to every sharp surface in the house. Even the ceiling fan because babies can definitely reach up there.

"It is a vault." Kai insisted, standing with his duck tape and pulling out a huge piece. "We are protecting priceless valuables."

Isla kneaded her brow tiredly. "Did you just refer to our children as 'priceless valuables?'"

Kai gasped. "You don't think they're valuable?"

"I think you're making it sound like we have twenty-four karat gold baby statues lying around in here." Isla retorted. She took a deep breath and stepped over the baby gate to talk to him. "Kai, I know you love them and want to protect them but this is one of the stupidest things you've ever done. I'm a mother, I can't be struggling to open the fridge because you managed to place a lock on it."

"I'm just keeping them safe as any parent would! I don't see the big deal!" Kai exclaimed.

"No other parent would do this. And I can't get food without wrestling with that lock for an hour. That's a big deal." Isla gave him a look. "Besides, you can't baby proof the world, honey."

"You're right!" Kai said in realization. "I was so focused on the house that I forgot about the real dangers outside! I'm going to need to put some baby gates out in the park!"

Isla stumbled back when he went rushing last her. "Wait- no that's not what I meant!" She called after him half-heartedly even though she knew there was no stopping him.

There was a loud slam of the back door and Isla winced as the sound of two crying babies waking up from their nap sounded.

"Great," Isla said sarcastically as she unlocked the baby gates to get to the nursery.

****

Isla was soundly sleeping. As a parent with two baby twins, you don't get a full night's sleep so she was enjoying the dreamless slumber until someone shook her aggressively. Her instincts moved before her brain and suddenly there was a crack as an elbow collided with someone's stomach. Isla's eyes flew open and she shot up to see Kai laying in a fetal position with his arms wrapped around his abdomen.

"What the heck, Kai???" Isla hissed through the darkness and squinted at his silhouette.

"Good one, sweetie." Kai wheezed.

"What is it? Did you set the shower curtain on fire by accident again?" Isla asked in an irritable tone.

"No!" Kai sat up and turned to talk to her. His eyes sparkled in the night with excitement and pride. "I just thought of how we can keep the twins safe from the horrors of the world. Two words: fire wall. As in a literal fire wall."

Isla stared at him for a moment before slowly turning to look at the clock. "It's four am." She said flatly.

"...so what are your thoughts?" Kai questioned anxiously, oblivious to the dangerous look in her eye.

A hand shoved his face away before Isla yanked the comforter over her head. "Two words: shut up."
