It was dark, but muffled voices could be heard and a fire was burning my right hand. Then, it was emptiness once again.
It was about an hour before I could hear the voices again, only this time it was too bright for me to try and open my eyes. Growning, I tried to reach for the light switch on my nightstand but I found nothing. I willed myself to open my eyes only to be met with a light green pastel walls.
That was definitely not my room. I shot up in bed looking around me skeptically. Obviously, moving this fast wasn't a wise decision, my head threatened to burst while all my muscles were cramping as if I had a fight or ran up a mountain.
"-Lili honey... you're up!
-Mom? Where am I? What happened?
-I don't really know sweetie. After you'd left with the alpha, we assumed you'll be staying at his house. But then, he called us the next morning telling us you're at the pack clinic." She said while passing me a cup of water.
"Now that you're awake, I'll go back home and let your father and brother know. They were worried sick about you." She kissed me goodbye on my forehead.
"Mom, can you please call aunt Jasmine for me on your way out?"
Left alone one more time, I observed my surroundings carefully while trying to decifer what was happening.
All I could remember from that night was the announcement and then us in the garden... and...
"Oh God SNOW..."
I'd heard Snow's voice in my head claiming Alpha Sarvan as our mate.
But I couldn't feel her anymore...
At that moment, something caught my eye; a golden-like serum dropping in the IV line.
"-What the hell?!
-I had to put you on small doses of wolfsbane to sedate your wolf since her power was overwhelming your human-like body. Alpha Sarvan couldn't handle seeing you suffering, although I've explained to him that it was just like your first shift but 10 times worse.
Lili, you should've told me what happened with Snow.-How... how do you know about her?
-I'll let Alpha Sarvan tell you that but for now you need to rest and recharge."
The dripping sound of the IV threatened to drive me insane. I had every intent on pulling it out but a knock on my door saved it.
"Come in."
The door opened to reveal Luna Jane.
"-Luna?
-Oh but from what I've heard, you're the new Luna.
-I'm not... not yet at least.
-Enough nonsense, tell me how are you feeling right now?
-I'm good, I'm just a little bit tired and I feel off... Shit! Shit! Sorry but I need to check out something."
I mastered all the power that was left in me, torn off the IV line and went running down the corridor.
"I'll meet you in the alpha's room Luna..."
I couldn't believe it! How didn't I think about that earlier. If wolfsbane was used against any wolf, it would be easily detected in his blood but what if it was never wolfsbane or a mysterious deadly disease. What if it was only something powerful enough to weaken you but would never kill you.
Arriving to the laboratory section of the clinic, I requested a toxicology test to be done on the alpha's blood.
Luckily, blood was drawn earlier for different investigations."-But doctor, a number of the reactives is not available since we don't use them often... more like never.
-I want it done today. Use all the pack's connections and resources to obtain them and I'll help where I can."
Heading to a changing room, I slipped into some baggy scrubs since seeing the alpha in a hospital gown wouldn't be decent.
I knocked on his door waiting for a permission to come in but instead the door opened to reveal a not so happy Luna.
"You need to rest Lili, you can't go running like this just hours after your coma.
-I'm fine, I promise. It's not like I was out for a day or something..."
When no one responded, I pressured:
"-Is it...?
-You were out for an entire week dear...
-O...Okay"
I didn't know how to react to that but I had no time for this anyway.
"Luna, Alpha, we need to talk. Actually, I think I'm onto something. I have this theory... I don't want to get your hopes up but I'm 90% positive about my diagnosis. Some reactives are missing to confirm it though. So, it will take a few more hours.
Hopefully, by tomorrow..."I didn't get to finish my sentence.
An all too familiar loud growl interrupted me:
"Lili, you need to go to him daughter. Trust me, as an alpha, I know he must be going crazy for not finding you in bed after that long of a coma."
Alpha James was right. I was in trouble. My room was on the same floor just down the corridor. I could hear some pack members trying to calm him down, trying to explain that I was still alive, obviously, but all in vain.
Entering the room, I saw him standing by the bed. He didn't seem to notice me approaching him until I was just behind him, my hand on his back.
Feeling my touch, he turned so quickly that I didn't get to register what was happening. He engulfed me in his arms with his head buried in my neck.
I tried to step back but Mr. Alpha growled warningly.
I actually felt safe in his arms.
"Mae, you have seconds to explain and calm down my wolf before I mark you here and now."
Oh god...
"-I might have figured out what was going on with alpha James!?...
-Really?! Tell me more!" He let me go giving me his unwavering attention.
I told him about my theory; Someone might have used small doses of wolfsbane to gradually tire his wolf and then start infusing him with a human poison that would render his body too weak for his wolf to rise ever again.
"-Mae...
-Yes...
-I can't find the words to express my joy and gratitude to you now, but one thing I know for sure is that you're not leaving this room anytime soon. You'll direct the work from here. That's the only compromise I'm willing to offer.
You're not off the hook yet.-Okay... okay fine. But on one condition, I'm not going to get injected by wolfsbane ever again.
When or if Snow's power gets overwhelming once again, I'll deal with it my own way."He got himself a deal and a good dealer.
