"It's okay," Jacob says. "You're not pushing as hard as you think you are. She's fragile, but you're not going to break a rib by fastening her diaper. Okay?"
Troye nods as he carefully lifts his daughter and slides the soft diaper under her before placing her back down, he covers her front and tapes the sticky side down gently. He grins cheekily at the tiny girl, "You look so cute."
Jacob chuckles and hugs the boy's waist. "She takes after her daddy," he mumbles, kissing his cheek.
"Which one?" Troye giggles.
Jacob grins, "You."
"Hm...I think it's you actually."
"No, it's definitely you," Jacob says softly, pecking Troye's lips.
The two boys pull apart as the tiny girl in front of them begins to cry, her arms and legs flailing out of dissatisfaction.
"Oops too much PDA," Troye giggles. He gently rubs Bailey's tummy, "It's okay. Are you hungry? Is that what your deal is? We gotta get you fed, missy."
Jacob carefully grabs one of her moving hands between his thumb and index finger and grins as she wraps her tiny hand around his finger.
"Here you guys go. We'll get you situated and you can feed her," Tammy says walking in with a small bottle of formula. "Looks like everything went okay with changing her. Who did it?"
"Me," Troye says, continuing to rub Bailey's belly.
"Good job," Tammy smiles. "Time for feeding. Have a seat."
Troye sits in the familiar leather chair excitedly. Tammy swaddles Bailey in her pink blanket, lifts her up carefully and places her in Troye's arms.
Handing him the bottle, Troye slides the rubber nipple into her mouth.
It takes a second for her to start drinking the formula, but once she does, Troye's face lights up, "Oh my gosh."
Jacob and Tammy chuckle.
"She's so big. I can't handle it."
"She's only gonna get bigger. Give you more of her to love," Tammy says softly.
"I can't wait. I'm so excited, Jacob."
"I know, honey, so am I."
"Oh," Troye squeaks, watching the girl in his arms eat. "I could just eat you."
"Hey now," Jacob chuckles. "She was already in your belly once, I think that's enough."
Troye chuckles, "Your daddy isn't very funny, is he? Nah, I don't think so either."
Jacob rolls his eyes, "Whatever. You love my jokes."
"I can definitely tell who is going to be telling Dad Jokes," Tammy sighs.
"Oh yeah, definitely," Jacob smiles. "You think this is bad? I'm just getting started."
"Don't encourage him," Troye whines.
"Did your dad tell too many Dad Jokes while you were growing up?" Tammy laughs.
Troye falls silent as Jacob turns to look at him.
"Um...yeah. Some-something like that."
The area falls quiet, Troye going back to watching his daughter eat.
"I'm sorry, Troye. I didn't mean to...pry."
"No, no, you're okay. You didn't know," Troye sighs. "My dad left when I was little. Like really little, my brother who is three years younger than me doesn't even know him. I barely even know him, but I remember enough to know that he was in my life at one point and then he left, I just don't know...why."
He speaks again after another moment of silence. "You don't have to be sorry either. I don't have any memories with him in them so it's not like it hurts my feelings. I mean it hurts of course that he left us, m-my mom was eight months pregnant with my brother," he chuckles bitterly. "But other than knowing he abandoned us, I have no reason to...hate him. If that makes sense I don't know, I just..."
Jacob stands up from his seat and gently takes Bailey from his arms as the brunette sniffles.
"I'll be right back," Troye mumbles, standing up and walking out of the NICU.
Jacob is left alone with Tammy as he feeds the girl in his arms.
"I'm so sorry," the nurse says. "I didn't mean to upset him."
"It's not your fault. I promise. He just rarely ever talks about what really happened with his dad. Even with me. He's only talked about the situation once with me and he cried like he is now. Our friends don't even know. They think that his dad died because...well because, for Troye, it's easier than saying his dad just doesn't want to be in his life. I'm honestly not really sure why he decided to tell you the truth about him. I've never seen him do that before."
"That's awful. Um...would you like to go see if he's okay? I can take Bailey for a few moments."
"Yeah. Thank you. I'll try to be quick."
"No worries," Tammy says taking Bailey from her dad's arms before watching him walk off in the same direction Troye had a minute earlier.
