Twenty-three

Ana

- Next day, last block -

"You can just sit and complete the packets I will give you." Mr. Wright explains to me as the class leaves to go get changed.

"Okay." I answer. He hands me the first packet. "Thanks."

I wheel myself next to the bleachers and begin to work on the packet Mr. Wright assigned me. "Hey." I look up to see Eric standing in front of me.

"Hi." I reply. "What's up?"

"I wasn't sure if we were still meeting today?" He asks.

"Oh— I am not sure. I'm sure Mr. Red will still let us use his room." I think out loud.

"I bet he will."

"So do I." I reply.

"Okay. Sounds good." Eric says.

"See you then." A giddy smile creeps across my face.

- "Then" -

"Yea, one last chapter to learn today. Then review." I explain to Eric as we make our way to Mr. Red's classroom.

"Do you think that I can pass the test on Friday?" Eric asks me.

"It doesn't matter if I think you'll pass. It's all about if you think you'll pass." I say, looking at him.

"Well, I don't know. I've been trying really hard with studying and all." He states. "Do you though?"

"Yes. I know you'll pass." I say.

"Thanks, Ana." Eric says.

I just smile and we make it to Mr. Red's room. "Hey kids! Perfect! I was hoping you would be here." He says.

"Hello." We both say.

"You both know the drill, the key is on my desk. Study hard, the test is coming fast!" Then he leaves.

"Cool, lets get started." He says as I wheel myself to the front of the desk and pull my books out.

"Lets." I answer.

- After the lesson -

Just as I close my history book, my phone rings. "It's my mom." I pull my phone to my ear. "Hey, mama."

"Hey, sweety! I won't be there to pick you up in time! Traffic is terrible!" She states.

"Okay, how long until you think you'll be here?" I ask.

"About forty-five minutes." She answers.

"Oh okay, I can wait." I sigh.

"Are you sure?" She questions.

"Yea. It's fine. Just drive safe." I laugh at the irony.

"I will! I love you! See you soon."

"Love you." I reply. "Bye." I hang up and put my phone on the desk and continue to gather my stuff.

"What do you have to wait for?" Eric asks.

I look up to him through my hair. "My mom isn't going to be able to get me a ride until later. So I will just wait for her." I answer.

"What about your dad?" He asks curiously.

"He doesn't get out of work for a while. Plus he is almost an hour away." I state. "I am just going to wait 'til my mom comes."
