"You're just going to ignore me? Is that it?" Alec broke the silence. Cassie had refused to say a word, looking straight ahead. "You know that us Shadowhunters don't have the privilege of love no matter how much we want it. Us Lightwoods are expected—"

"So, that's what this is about?" Cassie spoke, her voice small. "You won't be with me because of your image?" The blonde chuckled sadly, a sniffle following it. "And here I thought you were better than that."

"Cassie, please." He pleaded. "I don't want to lose you because of this."

"Alec, I can barely stand to look at you right now!" Cassiopeia exclaimed. "You should've just told me you didn't feel the same way." She mumbled.

"I can't lie to you."

"But you can do this?" She scoffed. "I think we should take some time apart."

"What?"

"It's killing me inside, Alec. Knowing you're so close but so out of reach." She shook her head. "I can't do this anymore."

"No, this isn't what I wanted."

"Then what do you want? Because you can't have it both ways, Alec."

"I want—"

"Say it," Cassie whispered. "Say the words and I'm yours, Alec."

"I can't."

"Then that's it then." The blonde spun on her heel in the direction where she came from and walked away, leaving Alec alone with his thoughts.

"So, is cracking someone's mind open supposed to take this long? Maybe we, or... you should go check?" Simon asked, warming his hands on the fire. Cassiopeia sent Izzy a look, silently pleading her to take care of him. Regulus had been staring at his sister since she got here. He knew something had to have gone down with Alec since he too looked grave.

"Jace has it covered," Alec answered before Isabelle could. Cassiopeia flinched at the sound of his voice, which Regulus noticed, making him send a look to the Lightwood boy.

"Take my word for it," Isabelle spoke. "The Silent Brothers are quite unpleasant."

"That's not helping," Simon muttered. "Not at all." He turned to Cassie and Reggie. "What if Clary can't handle the Brothers?"

"Then she dies." Cassiopeia deadpanned.

"It literally never stops talking," Alec remarked.

Simon turned back to Cassie. "Is he always so charming?"

"You have no idea."

Isabelle ignored the blonde's comment. "Firstborn. Heavy is the head that wears the crown."

Simon hummed. "I feel his pain. Only son."

"We literally never asked." Cassiopeia blurted in her straight-faced glory.

Isabelle rolled her eyes and made a mental note to ask her what was wrong later, and silently urged Simon to continue.

"My mother wants me to be a CPA."

Isabelle hummed. "And you? What do you want?"

"Me?" Isabelle nodded at Simon. "Well, I'm in a band."

"Yeah? What type of music? Let me guess. Indie rock?"

Simon chuckled nervously before replying. "Yeah."

"Got anything on your phone?"

"I do, we recorded our last set, We killed." He checked his pockets. "I left my phone in the van."
