Levi’s POV
It scared me how much i missed her. her face kept flitting across my mind when i wasn’t consciously thinking about something else. I had caught myself more than once, aimlessly staring out at the beach goers, all the while thinking about her. About the curve of her naturally red lips, the way her unruly red curls blew in the wind, or how her adorable laugh tinkled softly through the air when she found something funny. She hand’t showed up at the beach for six days and it was starting to gnaw at me. I ran into the doctor from the lifeguard base four days after my family lunch with Dakota. The brunette had told me she was on her way to take off Dakota’s cast. I had thought about going with her but decided against it. Dakota would show up at the beach when she wanted to see when again- until then i’d have to wait for her.
I rubbed my eyes and blew out a breath, trying to clear my mind form Dakota’s green eyes. There was a group of small children playing in the gentle waves, young children i should be watching, not thinking about a certain girl, i thought to myself grimly. I jumped down from the highchair and walked towards the little kids. The cold water rushed up the beach and over my feet, my toes sinking into the wet sand.
“Levi!” Diana squeaked from behind me. I turned around and her racing down the beach towards me. I opened my arms and bent down ready to catch her. When she jumped into my arms i straightened up and spun her around. Her childish laugh filled the air around me and i smiled at her carefree laugh.
“Hey Didi” i said pressing a kiss to her forehead.
“I haven’t seen you in such a long time” she said a small frown appearing on her small face.
“Well you’re here now aren’t you” i said tickling her sides.
She laughed again and squirmed in my arms.
When she wiggled out of my hold i set her down and let jump through the small waves, watching her blonde pigtails bounce with every small hop she did over the incoming wave.
She spent a good five minutes splashing in the waves, until she abruptly spun around facing me, as if she suddenly remembered something.
“Where’s your friend? The one with the red curls?”
I shot my baby cousin a questioning look.
“How do you know about Dakota?” I asked her.
She grinned toothily at me. “Sammy told me all about her”
“You know Sammy?”
She nodded her head eagerly, “She is in my class in kindergarten” she said, “Where is she? I want to meet her.”“Hullo” Dakota’s voice said from behind me. “I’m Dakota”
I turned around so fast i was afraid my neck might pop, and saw Dakota shaking Diana’s tiny hand.
“Hey” i breathed, a huge smile spreading across my lips.
She looked up at me and returned the smile, just as wide. Her eyes were brighter than usual behind her glasses, twinkling up at me.
