Dakota’s POV
I felt him pull me closer to his chest, moving his body perfectly in time to mine. My mind was in a haze as I let Levi take the lead. He guided my body gently against his and we swayed in tact. My heart was pounding in my rib cage due to the contact and I closed my eyes soaking in every moment. I don't know long we danced, but my legs started buzzing from moving so long and i looked up at Levi. His eyes opened when he felt me turn in his arms.
"Can we go get something to drink?" I yelled, my throat dry.
He nodded his head and gently pulled me to the cooler. We grabbed our drinks and sat down in the sand in front of the bonfire. Couples were all around us cuddling or kissing in the generous warmth of the big fire. I crossed my legs and opened my drink, wiping the slight moisture from my forehead.
"How long did we dance?" I eventually asked, finally able to talk normally.
"I lost track of the time" he said grinning cheekily at me causing my heartbeat to grow stronger and pound in my ears.
I bought the can back up to my lips to distract myself from his smile. I laid down and stared at the sky again the white smoke rising up between the stars. Levi copied me and pulled me closer to his body until my head rested in his chest, right above his steadily beating heart. This was the longest I'd ever stayed at a party and by far the far the best I'd ever attended. It seemed like Levi bought a lot of firsts into my life, I couldn't suppress the small smile that spread across my lips at the thought. As the evening progressed the music shifted from loud and upbeat to relaxed slow songs. More and more people gathered around the red flames and soon the all the partygoers had settled down beside us. The white moon rose higher and higher into the sky and the conversations hushed down to quiet whispers. A weird atmosphere, a surrealistic peacefulness feel across the beach and I lifted my head slightly from Levi's chest to look up. Not a single day from the day of the accident had ever been so peacefully quiet and perfect. People lay in similar positions to us and we're all gazing at the marvellous stars overhead, the later it became the brighter they shown, until at one point the milky way stretched from one end of the beach to the other. I sucked in breath at the sight. I'd never taken the time to appreciate something like this before. I'd always tried preventing long quiet phases like these because they stirred up dangerous painful memories, but this was different. It seemed as if the rhythmic crashing of the waves, the constant stroking of Levi's hand on my back and the darkness that surrounded us allowed my mind to clear itself. No one was getting up or making a move to head home, so neither Levi not I changed our position. At a later stage a guy who i assumed was the host of the party handed out blankets for everyone and people cuddled together under the soft material, some dozing off. This was no where close to how I had imagined my day when I had been sitting at home at the table but when Levi pulled the blanket around us and I shuffled even closer to his warm body I felt my own eyes closing.
"Dakota" someone murmured softly close to my ear. I felt someone gently run a hand over my arm and down my back. I rubbed my eyes, still way too tired to wake up.
"Dakota, open those pretty eyes" the voice whispered again. My eyes snapped open at the words, my vision blurry. I felt around beside me for my glasses but only felt sand. Suddenly I felt them slip into my nose and I could clearly see Levi right in front me. My eyes widened and I shot up until I remembered where I was and why Levi was holding me close to his broad chest. I sighed and fell back onto the sand. When I looked up I saw that the Stars had disappeared and the blackness started turning into deep shades of purple.
"Good Morning" I mumbled sleepily tucking loose tendrils of hair away.
"Hey" he said grinning as me.
"I feel asleep" I stated tiredly, "and why am I awake at this hour?" I tested my hands in my stomach and looked up at his hazel eyes.
He sat up and pulled me up with him. He pulled me between his les my back pressed to his chest and pulled the blanket closer around us. I leaned
My head back against his collarbone and closed my eyes again feeling sleep creep up again.
"Don't fall asleep again else you're going to miss it" he said quietly beside my ear his warm breath fanning across my cheek, sending shivers down my spine.
"Miss what?" I asked my eyes still closed.
"That" he said.
I opened my eyes and almost gasped at the massive play of colors along the horizon. I couldn't distinguish where the sky ended and the ocean began and it seemed like the orange, red, pink and purple hues poured into the indigo water. The sky grew brighter and brighter, the dark colors seeped away making space for new even stronger ones. A rosy pink and orange tinted the clouds when the first whisper of a sun ray peeked over the horizon. I watched in stunned silence as the fiery ball rose in front of the clouds, bigger than I'd ever seen it before. The red light poured across the small peaks of the ocean and finally reached us. Beside us more and more people stirred and sat up as we watched the sun rise. When it had climbed completely above the horizon i let out a deep sigh and rested back against Levi.
"I've never watched the sunrise on a beach before." I said taking off my glasses and cleaning the lenses with my untucked shirt.
"I do. Every morning before my shift. I see it as a greeting to a new day" I heard him say, his chest rumbling against my back.
"Here, be careful it's hot" I looked up to see the same guy who gave us the blankets yesterday hold two steel camping cups with a steaming liquid inside.
"Thanks man" Levi said sitting up straighter to take the cups.
"Who's the lady?" The guy asked giving me a friendly smile and Levi an inquisitive look.
"Josh this Dakota, Dakota, Josh" I held out my hand to shake his.
"Nice to meet you. This is an amazing party" I said giving him trying to match his smile but failing once again and instead settling for my small smile.
"Glad you're enjoying it, now drink up before it gets cold"
I looked to the cup Levi was holding in front of me. Josh left us and I took the cup finding hot chocolate inside. Levi drew his legs up and let me rest my arms on them. I sipped my drink as a flock of seagulls flew above is momentarily disturbing the peace before they began sailing in the wind, their white feathers gleaming in the sun.
"This is amazing. Thank you for making my evening incredible and for waking me up" I said leaning my head back to look up at him. The early light caught in his brown locks and made his eyes turn to the same golden shade.
"Same goes for you, I haven't had that much fun at a party in a very long time."
When I finished my cup he pulled the fallen blanket over us and lay back down. I felt the sleepiness return despite the light and heard Levi mumble something about waking me up at eight. I closed my eyes and curled up next to him so that my head rested in the crook of his neck, shielding my eyes from the sun. His body warmth and the faint smell of his cologne allowed a quick escape into darkness.
