Let Me Go

[Chapter 12]

"Katie, please, open up!"

The previously heavy pounds on the wooden door subtled and turned into gentle ones. Katie's mind was racing as her chest rose up and down in anticipation.

"What the hell am I going to-" She turned, only to find herself abandoned in her bedroom, no trace of her 'Heroine in Shining Armor' found. She's going to have to talk to Alfred. God knows what he's going to do to her once she lets him in.

Where the hell did she-?!

Why did she even punch Kiku? What in the right mind would do that?! What person in the right mind would provoke and antagonize a person in control like that? She was under their mercy. If they had any.

Thoughts of all the horrid mutilation and dehumanization they could do to her filled her mind as the knocks toned done.

With a soft 'creak', the door opened ever-so carefully. Alfred's head poked through the doorframe, cerulean eyes scanning Katie's shivering and fragile figure from the bottom to the top.

After another swift push, the door was fully open.

Alfred stepped inside, Katie's breathing getting heavier and heavier with each step he took. He towered remarkably over her pitiful frame which made Katie's fear increase ten-fold.
I'm going to die repeated in her thoughts like an alarm bell.
With a furious slam, the door shut behind Alfred, sealing off Katie's fate and only plausible exit.

"So then," His words were cold and coated with malice. Freezing was an understatement to what the temperature had been reduced to. Katie felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up as an impulse. "Why did you do it?"

Shit.

Receiving no response, he reached for the door and locked it firmly. "Let me rephrase that." Katie watched as Alfred tiredly roll his eyes in exasperation. "What in the almighty fuck gave you the grand idea of punching a country?"

Katie remained silent.

Alfred took in that silence.

"You're not going to answer? Are you not going to goddamn answer?"

No response.

Katie's entire body froze in horror at the sound of Alfred's roaring anger. Alfred pulled back, taking a couple of steps towards the door.

"Who do you fucking think you are?"

"Who do YOU fucking think YOU are?"

Katie's words came out of nowhere. Her body was retorting on its own, without her consent. But she kept going.

"You're supposed to be the hero! The hero who saves the damsel in distress! I suppose I'm not a goddamn damsel; I'm a fucking prisoner!" And going.

"What the fuck do you want from me?! What the eternal loving FUCK do you want from me?!" And going.

"You have done- no. All of you damn bastards have taken me away from the people I love! From society! From my family! From my-" until she can no longer go on.

Her legs no longer held her up. She fell on her knees and her tears came pouring like a storm. She didn't know what to do but cry. But let go of the emotions, hatred, isolation, fear and sadness she has built up in her.
He stood there. He stood there watching her, not knowing whether to feel disgusted, pity or anger at Katie for lashing out like this.

Katie was a godforsaken mess. But did she care? She didn't. She didn't know what else to do but cry her heart out, unleash the anger she's harbored for days. But, she felt relieved. She felt free.

"Katie, please, get up...I-I don't know. Just, calm down for a second..." Alfred got down on one knee and lightly placed an arm on Katie's back, patting it gently. All rage he had presented was thrown out the window. "Just-calm down..we'll talk this out..." He didn't know what to say, he just comforted the wretched up Katie.

"No it won't! I'm never going to get my goddamn life back! I'm never going to see my family again! I'm never going to go back to my regular life ever again! I'LL NEVER BE FREE BECAUSE YOU ASSHOLES BROUGHT ME HERE AND TURNED INTO A-A FUCKING PRISONER!"

Silence.

An eerie, unsettling silence. Alfred no longer comforted Katie; instead, he stood up and faced Katie with a concerned look on his features. His hands dug into his pockets and he fished out piece of crumpled paper.
Katie raised her head and watched Alfred contemplate over the choice of his wordings.

"Katrina Jane Robins."
His voice lost the usual bright tone, only to be replaced with one of monotone. She gulped, waiting for him to continue.

"You're going to have to realize that you're life is gonna change. We're sorry, we really are, but sacrifices had to be made...just for the new Nation to fully materialize."

"BULLSHIT WITH THAT!"

"We've talked to you about this before, dudette!"

"BULLSHIT WITH THAT!"

"We're getting to a goddamn impasse!" He's at his limit. Katie flinched at the volume and impatience he had in his voice. "You won't listen!" Alfred angrily stomped on the ground, Katie could feel the ground beneathe her knees vibrate slightly.

"When will you open your eyes?! When will you accept that true freedom is acceptance?! When will you realize that the very reason you're here is for you to realize your true purpose in life!?"

"When I'm free." Katie whispered hoarsely.

"When I'm back home, laughing with my friends. When I'm resting on my bed with my sister beside me. When I'm at school, participating in activities. When I see Anna and Nina again. When I'm away from you."

Alfred didn't even respond to her answer. He tossed down the piece of paper towards her and swiftly exited the room without another word.
The piece of paper landed in front of Katie and almost instantly, she scrambled towards the paper, intruiged about what it said. Once it was in her hands, she quickly unfolded it, revealing neat cursive letters.

'Please meet me tomorrow, at the library. Do not be late. Ten o' clock in the evening. Thank you.'
