Chapter 8

A/N: /* The second remake for this chapter for fucks sake! Writing these plot twists are like playing with fire. If it's too big for me to handle, I'm fucked. */

/-/Third Person POV /-/

It's been a week.

A week since Katie's abduction. A full, uneventful, empty and miserable week.

What happened? Is she okay? Is she still alive? Did she go insane?

These questions were engraved into Jenny's mind. Here she was - sitting in room, openly refusing the company of anyone else other than her family. Everyday played the same for her, as if it was a broken record of loneliness and helplessness.

The memory of what happened the previous week was also etched into her. Recalling the memory of her sitting there inside the police station and getting interrogated over and over again became somewhat like an everyday activity for her. For the first day after Katie's disappearance, she refused to go to school. For the second and third, she refused to engage in a proper conversation, saying she has 'no mood to talk'. Fourth and fifth, she gave up leaving her room, forcing her parents to bring her food upstairs. Sixth, well, this became her official cycle.

Nothing more.

The once 'happy-go-lucky' and cheerful Jennifer Robins was long gone.

She gave a sluggish glance towards her desk. There sat opened empty notebooks, books and folders. But what Jenny had been staring at in particular was a small envelope resting in the middle of the table with its side tear open neatly.

"Joel, for all we know Katrina's out there! She could've been-"

"Yes, I know! But you have to calm down Kassandra! Nothing will be solved if you keep screaming and freaking out and-"

"Fine, FINE! I'm calming down, see? Calm. Now", Kassandra took a deep breath before ruffling her hair a little and scowling at her husband. "Where's Katie? You said that'll help, right? You said that calming down will solve it, right?"

"I didn't mean like that!"

A silence passed.

A peaceful dinner it was supposed to be. The smell of roast chicken, spaghetti and pizza frolicked in the air as the candles on the birthday cake lost its flames.

November 8. Jennifer's 10th birthday- the day that Katrina Lane Robins went missing.

The heated argument between the two distressed adults was probably going to end with an impasse. Jenny kept her head down and flashed the fork and spoon laying idly on her plate a sorrowful expression before picking them up and placing them in the dishwasher. Every step she took was heavy as she thought of all the terrible things that could happen to her older sister. The world out there wasn't as kind as people would portray it to be.
