Chapter 9: To My Family.
--
"Officer Jones, at your service"
After a very quiet and uneasy car ride home, Jenny silently made her way up the stairs and into her room. Her movement was sluggish and her back felt like it had a ton of bricks resting on it with every step she took. She can’t believe it.
She’s gone. The sister who she loved and cared for was suddenly gone. Her face was damp with her tears and the room was spinning like some sort of carnival ride. The hair in front of her face blocked her foggy vision, causing her to repeatedly grab on the wall to recover her balance.
Was she alright? Where was she? Who took her? Is she still....alive?
Replacing her unanswered questions were a handful of happy memories Jenny spent with her. She opened the wooden door slowly and began shuffling to her bed, refusing to lift her feet off of the ground. She squeezed her eyes tight and tried to fall into her dream world, but she just couldn’t – the memories she had were too vivid for her to just shrug off. Every time she would fall into sleep, her eyes would snap open and Jenny would quickly sit up from her bed, sweating very violently.
3:34 AM, the digital alarm clock read before her eyes slowly began closing in on her.

"I don't want to go to school..." She murmured in monotone. Eyes were puffy and red, her eye bags were visible and her lips were dry as ever. She and her mother were having breakfast together the morning after. The sweet smell of pancakes frolicked in the air as Jenny picked up the fork and slowly began cubing the meal.
"But Jen, you have to..." Kassandra tried to persuade, but her attempt was in vain as her daughter broke eye contact with her and sunk into her seat. She understood how much Katrina’s disappearance had impacted on her, and she knew she had to take some time to take in what’s happening. It wasn’t easy, she knew that. "Alright then."
The air was dead. No morning laughs to be shared, no casual chats, and two empty seats were present.
“Mommy, where’s dad?” Jenny asked as she began taking in a cube of pancake.
“Upstairs, sweetie.”
“Why isn’t he eating breakfast with us?”
Kassandra paused at the question before taking a deep breath. “He has work to do.”
Jenny stood up, empty plate in hand. She made her way to the sink and placed the plate down before rinsing it with water. “Mommy, I’m done.” She dried her hands and slowly made upstairs. “Mommy?”
Kassandra didn’t answer as her daughter snapped her head towards her and gazed at her with an unmoving stare, expecting a response of some sort. “Yes, dear?”
“Big sister’ll come back.” Jenny smiled warmly as she placed her hand on the banister and began climbing.
