Chapter Three- Tormented
As soon as they landed back on the ship, Valentine walked away from them--he knew Olivia would be fine-- while Jace gently sat Olivia down on a crate and then kneeled in front of her before pulling out his stele and pressing it to her healing rune. ''Jace, I'm fine-''
Jace scoffed, his hand wrapped tightly around his stele as he traced her healing rune with it. Olivia mentally snorted. She was having flashbacks of the previous day, when Jace had been injured and she had been the one to heal him. ''You were shot by a ruined arrow Olivia,'' he reminded her. '' For angel's sake, stop acting as if nothing had happened. Stop acting as if you aren't hurt.''
Olivia frowned. Jace was upset, his rigid body posture and rough voice told her that much. ''Jace-''
''No!'' He moved his steele away and looked up at her, his eyes wide and filled with a wild mixture of anger, fear, and shock. ''Damnit , Olivia.'' the boy raised his hands to cup her face, but then stopped mid-away and reminded himself that he couldn't touch his sister like this. Not now, not ever.
With that thought in mind, he lowered his hands back against his side and--unknownigly--clenched them into fists. ''If something had happened to you--if the wound had been deadly-- ''
''But it wasn't.'' Olivia spoke softly and then shuddered. He was close, close enough for her to feel his breath on her face. ''You don't get it.'' he shook his head and closed his eyes. ''You were covered in blood. You were dying--'' Jace paused and shivered as he recalled that dreadful moment. ''You were dying and there wasn't a thing I could-''
''Jace-''
''Why?'' he asked, opening his eyes and focusing them solely on her. ''Why did you take the arrow? It was meant for me. Jocelyn was trying to shoot me. Why did you come in between?''
''Because it was the right thing to do!'' she snapped. The downworlders that were around them stopped banging the bars of their prison cages and looked in the two shadowhunters's direction with curiosity, but the two weren't paying attention to all the eyes that were looking at them, instead, they were busy in staring--slightly glaring--at each other. ''I couldn't let mom kill you, her own son, just because she thinks you're Valentine's shadow.''
Is that the only reason? her inner voice asked, Is that the only reason why you saved him?
No. No, that was not the only reason. She saved him because she couldn't bear to lose him. She saved him because...because he was her best friend--her family.
''Olivia.'' Jace sighed and rubbed his face, the events of tonight still lingering in his brain. ''Never do something like this again, okay?''
Olivia clenched her jaw in stubbornness and stayed silent.
