                                                      Chapter Nine-Darkness Prevails

Jace was not afraid of his trial. He had nothing to be afraid of. He hadn't done anything wrong nor was he a traitor to his people.

Those were the words he kept repeating in his head as two silent brothers pulled him out of his cell, chained his wrists and legs, and escorted him towards his trial area. '' I hope you get out of here,'' Hodge spoke in a whisper as he passed by his cell.

I hope that too, Jace thought, but didn't say anything.

After walking for what felt like hours, they reached a place that was, from the looks of it, made especially for trails of prisoners. The place was like a huge room, with the light of the torches hanging on the walls being the only thing illuminating the entire area.

In the center of the room, right in front of a raised platform--Jace knew he was going to be standing there--on the top of a table, was the most sacred weapon of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Sword.

Jace gulped, his heart beating quickly as the Silent brothers dragged him onto the raised platform.

He wasn't wrong in any way, he knew that, but the Mortal Sword's sole purpose was to pull secrets out of people and he was worried that he might utter out his darkest and deepest secret--his love for his sister.

Aldertree, who was, as the head of the Institute, present here for his trial, stepped forward as the Silent brother, brother Enoch Jace believed was his name, placed the Mortal Sword in Jace's outstretched hands. He immediately felt the power of the sword, like little needles stabbing at his soul, searching for the things he had kept hidden from everyone, and gasped.

''You stand before the sword,'' the second Silent brother--Jace didn't know his name, and was not interested in knowing it--spoke in his head, ''Accused of treason against the Clave, as well as the murder of two downworlders. Be thee innocent or guilty, may the truth free thy soul.''

''Have you anything to say before we start?'' Aldertree asked.

We have both darkness and light inside us, Jace, it's what we choose that matters.

You are good Jace, beneath that I am too cool for this world attitude, you have a good heart.

My parabatai, my brother, your heart is as pure as the first rays of the sun.

Olivia, Ian, and Alec's voices rotated in his head, giving him the strength that he needed to get through this. ''facilis descensus Averno.''

''Descent into Hell is easy,'' Aldertree translated, an impressed look on his face, as if he hadn't expected Jace to know Latin.

''Alec, Ian, and I use it to remind each other we can't be broken.''

Aldertree smiled, smirked, and then sighed. ''We'll see about that. Let's start,'' he crossed his hands behind his back and took a step forward, though for what, Jace couldn't understand. ''Did you kill the werewolf, Gretel Monroe?''
