Chapter Ten-Where Do We Go From Here?

Death was the ultimate truth of life. Olivia knew this as a child and she knew this now as a shadowhunter. Death couldn't be defeated, not by humans, not by gods, not by angels, and definately not by shadowhunters. Death was never merciful. It only took and took and took and never gave. Olivia had always known  this, and now, after seeing her mother dead, she knew this fact even more clearly.

''Guys....?'' Simon suddenly spoke softly, pulling both the sisters out of their thoughts. ''My hebrew that bad?'' he joked when both of them didn't say anything.

Olivia sighed and leaned back into Simon's couch.

They were inside Simon's mini home, it was basically Jade Wolf's storage room (the wolves, since they hated vampires, had thrown Simon in this place)-- Olivia wanted to talk to the wolves about how badly they had treated him, but right now she was so numb that she could barely stand, so going to the wolves and snapping at them for their rude behavior was out of the question.

''Your hebrew's perfect, Simon.'' she mumbled and then gasped in surprise when her phone suddenly softly dinged.

She pulled it out of her pocket and peered down at it--only to see that she had received four missed calls from Ian and four missed calls from Jace.

Olivia bit her lip. She had been trying to avoid going back to the Institute for two reasons. One was that her mother had died there and going back to her mother's death place was going to make her overwhelmed with sadness, and the second reason was this--Jace and Ian.

She loved both of them--she  was trying her hardest to bury her feelings for Jace, but nothing was working--and she was feeling guilty. She was feeling guilty because she fell for someone she wasn't supposed to fall for. She was feeling guilty because her feelings for Ian were getting dimmed by her feelings for Jace. She was feeling guilty because...because she was wrong, horribly and utterly wrong.

''What if we can get mom back?" Clary suddenly spoke.

What if we can get mom back?

Olivia's heart thudded with hope, but then her eyes locked with Simon's, and dread replaced her hope as she remembered how Simon had came back to life: as a vampire. She could still remember how hard it had been for him to adjust to his new life, to control his urges, to stay away from the sun, to always lurk in the shadows....

Did she want this to happen to Jocelyn too? Did she want her mother to come back to life as a vampire--or some other creature--and struggle to adjust to her new identity?

No. No, she didn't want this. She didn't want her mom to go through what Simon had gone through.

''Clary, no.'' she spoke.
