He stares at me for a moment as I try to explain. "When a person dies, their soul goes to a realm outside our own. Another place... Not above or below the earth, but somewhere else entirely. There are gods who deal with this sort of thing. I could contact one of them so you could visit the realm & see your mom. It won't last for long... stay there for long & you get stuck, unless you're a deity of death. So, it would only be brief but-"
His eyes widen & he wraps his arms around me, pulling me into a hug. "Thank you! This means more to me than you can ever know..."
I smile down at him, pulling him so close I can smell the shampoo of his hair. "No need to thank me, love. I just think... you deserve some closure..." He snuggles close to my chest, not needing to say anything to let me know how happy this makes him. He's so close I can feel his warmth & I sigh. I would do anything for him.
. . .
It doesn't take me long to contact one of the death gods. I try to keep in contact with the people I meet along my journey with Dakota, & this is no exception. After one particularly heartbreaking death of my dearest, I had contacted one of them, trying to figure out where his soul would end up next before it arrived back in our world.
As a reincarnating being, Dakota's soul only ever lingers briefly in the realm of the dead, before going back out into the world of the living, to be born again. I had thought that... I could catch him before he came back to the living. Reunite with him somehow, or at least figure out where he was going next so I could find him & be with him again.
The death gods had said that that was not how these things worked. There was a precarious balance between the worlds & to intervene so heavily between them... Could have dire consequences. They were masters of this sort of thing, so if I contacted them now, I could figure out... if Dakota could visit... just once to see his mom again.
"Hello, this is the Storm God," I say into the phone, after getting an eerily chipper greeting from the secretary on the other end. "I'm asking... This is another issue with my soul flame..." They pause on the other end for a moment, & I continue. "Not with him specifically, it's just... his mother died &... he'd like to see her, one last time..."
"What was the cause of death, sir?" They ask far too cheerily & I wince slightly before continuing.
"Fatal car accident when my soul flame was young..."
They paused for a moment on the other end. "& what is the name of his mother? I can look her up in our records..."
I glance at Dakota, who looks at me expectantly. "Just one moment-" I take the phone away from my face for a moment, turning to my beloved. "Darling... what was your mother's name?" I ask him gently, soothing his hair down reassuringly as I see his eyes darken. "The secretary needs to know for the records..."
He hesitates a moment before replying. "Suzanne Armstrong."
Sorry to end the chapter here, guys. I don't want it to get too long or anything... But I'll probs update soon, so... Don't worry :'D :)
