I threw my hands up in frustration. I was on the phone to Zara, a dressing gown on and a towel wrapped around my head. She was trying to help me find something to wear without her actually being to see any of the items of clothing.
I wasn't completely clueless in style, though a lot of people thought I was. And when people could be bothered to ask me, I would always ask why they thought I had no idea what makeup was, or who which beauty guru to go to. They all said the same thing-"but you read. You can't read and know how to do makeup."- I can. I read, because I love it, it doesn't consume my life. Most of the time.
My room was a mess, a rainbow of different clothing. Dresses, shirts, tops, shorts, skirts jeans: any item of clothing you could think about.
I almost have up, and called Hunter, until I saw it.It was a deep gold, and sparkly, covered with sequins. It had cute sleeves that went just to the crease in my elbow, and went just past knees, making it not too short, but not that I'm covered completely.
"Zara. I have found the dress."
"What does it look like?"
I told her.
"Oh. I remember that dress. It was so pretty, and you only got to wear it once. That was a shame."
"Yeah it really is beautiful. It looked pretty at the meet, so it should now."
I quickly changed out of my dressing gown, and shimmied into the dress. It was perfect.
"Oooh! Shoes!! Indi go into your mothers room and borrow her gold kitten heeled shoes. They'd go great with it. Oh, and get the studded earrings and silver necklace. The one from your Grandma."
I did as I was told, knowing to just trust whatever Zara says fashion wise.
"Okay. Now I just need makeup and hair. And I only have 15 minutes!"
"Well, go for the-"
"It's okay Za. I've got this bit covered. I've got to go now."
We said our goodbyes, and I started on my makeup.
I put on a light grey shadow, lined my eyes with a kohl pencil, and applied a light pink gloss. Then I moved onto my hair, and I put it into tight curls.I barely had time to grab my bag and phone, before the bell rang.
I rushed down as fast as I could, but of course I didn't make it down fast enough.
"So Hinter, your taking her to a party?"
"Yes mam, and it's Hunter, not Hinter."
"Whatever you say Hanter."
"Mum! I thought it was a Dad's job to grill any guy who comes in here."
My mum instantly fell silent, her smile dropping and I could see tears threatening to drop.
"Oh my gosh! Mum I'm so sorry. I didn't mean..."
"It's okay sweetie. Go have fun. I'll see you at 12."
"Bye mum."
"Bye Ms Flores."
We walked towards the blue BMW.
"So...what happened with your Dad? Things got pretty intense."
I ignored him.
"Is that a thing you do? When you don't want to answer a question you just ignore it?"
I stayed silent. I could feel the prick of tears behind my eyes. I willed myself not to spoil my makeup, and to not cry in front of Hunter.
It still hurt."Okay, I get it. You don't want to talk. You look nice tonight. The dress suits you."
"Thanks."
"No problem. When we get to the party, I expect you to get water from a bottle, and only get it yourself. Do not accept anything from anyone else okay? Even me."
"What if I want to get drunk?"
"Okay, then we'll you drunk."
I could hear a slight mumble, that sounded like the words, this ought to be good.
I settled back into the worn leather seats, and closed my eyes, thinking of anything but what happened at my house.
