We ran for minutes that I couldn't bear to count. Thomas made sure that we stayed motivated and kept moving, we were trying to race the sun after all. Eventually, we began to slow down and stopped at an opening in one of the maze's walls.
I watch as Thomas slowly peeks around the corner, looking into the corridor. "Is there a griever?" Chuck asks as Thomas comes around again, "Yeah."
Everyone appears to let out a shaky breath, me included. Back in the Glade, when we were creating our escape plan, we decided that I shouldn't try to control the grievers. It's best that this secret stays between the six of us.
"Take this Chuck." Minho gives Chuck a key that him and Thomas had found before me and Teresa arrived. A metal cylinder with wires poking out of it. Apparently, it was found inside of a griever.
I watch as Chuck examines the key, clearly shaken up by the mention of another griever and having the responsibility of protecting our only way out.
"It's okay, Chuck," I say, "Just stick with us." I glance to Teresa as she nods.
"Once we're through, it'll activate the door. All right, we stay close, we stick together." Thomas begins while tightening his grip on his spear. "Together, we get through this, or we die trying."
"Ready?" He asks everyone, and I get out my machete while everyone else gets out their own weapons. After Thomas looks at each and every one of us, he finally shouts, "LET'S GO!"
We start screaming as we run into the corridor, which consists of one long stone bridge and a large door on the other end of it. The griever wastes no time in charging at us. The boys with spears immediately attack it, sending it flying to one side of the bridge while we gathered on the opposite side.
"Watch the tail!" I hear someone scream, and I immediately crouch down out of instinct. From the corner of my eye, someone falls from the bridge's edge. They must've gotten struck by the griever's tail.
I look back to Teresa and Chuck, both next to each other while Teresa is crouched on the ground. All of a sudden, a griever leg lands itself right in front of Teresa, and she takes the quick chance to hit it with her weapon.
This sends the griever leg flying into the air, unfortunately knocking the key out of Chuck's hand. "The key!" Chuck and I both yell. He has a head start and I run after him, watching as the key almost rolls off the bridge before Chuck falls to his stomach and catches it, hanging face-first off the side of the bridge.
"Don't worry, Chuck! I got you!" I quickly pull him up by his backpack, soon realizing that another griever is making its way up the side of the bridge.
"Pull me up! Pull me up!" Chuck yells just as Teresa comes to help us. Once Chuck is back on the bridge, I take the time to kick the griever in its face, slowing it down for at least a couple of seconds.
We run back to the boys as they finish pushing a griever off the side of the bridge, and another screech suddenly comes from the right of us.
"THERE'S MORE!" I yell to them.
We run past the boys and to the stone door, only a few feet away when it opens to the sound of a high pitched beep. "It worked!" Chuck says while looking at the key.
I watch as multiple walls rise into the ceiling, revealing a circular door while allowing us to walk through safely. I look back at the boys, realizing their growing struggle as the two grievers take minimal damage and begin to overpower them.
"Contrer..."
The voice. She's back.
A different word, still in a language I don't understand, but this woman has saved me before. This word could help us, it could give us the upper hand. Even if this woman works for Wicked, she's saved me before.
"Teresa, go!" Thomas yells once he realizes the door had opened, and I begin to slowly walk back as I look beyond the boys to see more grievers piling in. If I don't say this word now, we could all end up dead.
I repeat this word in my head almost a million times, trying my best to mesmerize it as the voice hasn't spoken since. I'm terrified of screwing this up. Who knows what could go wrong if I mispronounce it or say the wrong thing. But I have to, I have to try.
I take in a deep breath and yell out, "CONTRER!"
Before I can even see what I've done, I run back to Chuck and Teresa, who are both glaring at me. "Are you crazy?" Teresa says, "Someone could've seen you! It's supposed to stay a secret!"
"No one saw me. They're too busy fighting for their lives."
"I watched them the whole time, none of them looked at you." Chuck reassured.
"See? The other boys were too focused on not dying, I was just trying to help."
"What did you even do?" Teresa asks.
"I–I don't know."
"You don't know?!"
"It saved me last time, didn't it?"
"What the hell?" I suddenly hear one of the boys say, and I quickly turn my head to see that the two grievers were beginning to fight each other.
"Okay, enough of this! We have to open this door!" Teresa yells, and I immediately turn my attention back to our original plan. The boys continue to fight as more grievers climb up from the side of the bridge.
I begin to tug on one side of the door, hoping it will move, but it's no use. I look over to see Teresa and Chuck doing the same thing. "How the hell does this open?" I ask frantically.
Suddenly, a red circular screen appears on the door. It's outlined in blue while a small map of the maze is in it's center, and eight white numbers float around it.
Teresa runs back to the door's opening, "Thomas! There's a code, eight numbers!"
I watch as Thomas and Minho yell at each other over the screaming. However, I'm too far away to hear what they're saying.
"Seven!" Teresa suddenly yells at us, and I finally realize that Thomas and Minho know the code.
I quickly turn around and find the number seven floating around the screen, I press on it and it immediately moves to the center of the screen. It's working, it's actually working.
"One!"
"Five!"
"Two!"
"Six!"
"Four!"
Teresa suddenly stops yelling out the numbers and I look back to see that Minho is trapped under a griever, "Minho!" I yell out, feeling a little guilty for not being out there.
Jeff then stabs his own spear into the griever that was pinning Minho down, which luckily let him crawl out to safety. But I watch in horror as Jeff is suddenly taken by the griever's claw-like tail and is flung behind it, his painful screams echoing off the corridor's walls.
It takes me a second to blink back into reality.
"Eight!"
"Three!"
There's no numbers left, and I watch as the red screen suddenly turns green. The word "COMPLETE" popping up in the center.
"We got it!" I yell to the boys, "The door opened!"
I watch as they run back to us, the previously raised doors falling down faster than some of the Gladers could keep up with. One griever makes its way under two doors when Thomas throws his spear at it, sending it back just in time for the next door to crush it.
We continue getting pushed into the circular door's room when it suddenly shuts, trapping us in darkness.
What the hell? Isn't this our way out?
A loud click fills my ears. Light beginning to fill the room as a door behind us slowly opens.
