The first phase

In this you have relatively long hair that goes past your shoulders because it plays along in the 3rd phase, sorry for how quiet y/n is in this part of the fanfic, after the hunter exams the personality opens a lot more.)

I got to the place for the hunter exam easily. 

I'm badge number 357. As I walk in, there are a lot of people who catch my attention. Badge number 44 was dressed like a creepy ass clown, #301 had pins in his face and clothing, #294 looked at me and gave me an overly friendly smile, #99 who was a young boy with white hair and blue eyes; he carried a skateboard. There were others but they didn't catch as much attention. #16 A short man with brown hair, and thick eyebrows walked up to me. He was wearing a blue shirt and smiling.

"You must be new here! It's my 35th attempt so I guess you could call me a hunter exam veteran." My jaw dropped. 35 times?! That's not something to be proud of.

"I'm tonpa." He said with his smile still plastered onto his face, it wasn't sincere. I've seen plenty of people fake a smile. I can usually tell when someone's not happy.

I nodded my head in acknowledgement.

"Here. Let's have a toast to friendship!" he said in his overly optimistic voice while handing me a drink.

I gave it back.

"No thank you." I politely responded.

"Oh- how come?" he asked acting disappointed.

"You just don't seem very trustworthy" I responded plainly.

His face fell into a grimace as I walked away. I moved over towards a wall, leaning against it. After a little bit of waiting around with many more applicants coming along, 3 specific applicants came into the greenish semicircular tunnel.

Illumi's POV-

There was a girl who walked in- #357. She looked familiar, so I stared at her face trying to remember. Oh yeah- that's y/n. I wonder why she's taking the exam. Whatever I shouldn't be getting distracted I need the license for my mission. That's all I need to focus on for now. I looked away and ignored her.

Y/n's pov-

Out of the three applicants who walked in, one was a young boy with spiky green hair. The other looked to be 17-18 years old with blond hair and grey eyes. The third was a tall man in a suit with glasses who looked to be in his mid to late-twenties.

Tonpa walked over to them chatting. I looked away not really caring. As I closed my eyes relaxing, there was a shrewd scream.

I look to where it came from. I saw a man kneeling on the ground, still screaming. His arms were out in front of him as they disintegrated into flower petals.

"My how unusual~ seems this poor man's arms have turned into flower petals now you see them now you don't~ you should be more careful and do apologize if you bump into someone~" #44 the clown-like man said to the bystanders watching the man's arms disappear. He walked away.

Witnesses of the incident went back to what they were doing beforehand. So, I did to. I relaxed, leaning back again, ignoring the now armless man.

Suddenly a weird sound like an alarm rang from behind the wall across from the elevator for a moment before stopping. The wall lifted revealing a man with a light pink hair and no mouth. His mustache looked more like a nosestache than a mustache, but I decided to ignore that small detail.

"I apologize for the delay thank you for waiting. the entry period for hunter applicants is officially closed so with no further ado, the hunter exam will now begin" The man explained.

"One final word of caution, if you're short on luck or ability, keep in mind that there's a very real chance you could end up seriously injured. Death is another distinct possibility. If you are willing to accept the risks involved. I'll ask you to follow me now, but the rest of you may exit through the elevator behind you." He cautioned.

Nobody moved towards the elevator. There were most likely a few who would choose to, but they would find it too embarrassing to leave when no one else was.

"Right. I am Satotz your examiner for the first part of the exam. Very well, all 404 applicants now participate in phase 1 please follow me." Satotz started walking forward. I noticed how unusual his walk was; he appeared to not be bending his knees or elbows at all.

His walk got faster till it became a run. He seemed to pick his set pace and kept running. I could keep up with this.

After about 4 hours of running, we started to go upstairs. On the stairs we sped up a bit. It wasn't too bad. We reached the tops of the stairs where a wall had lifted revealing a foggy forget ahead.

Satotz stopped at the top and I heard two young boys yell "GOAL!" the green haired boy and the white-haired boy had been racing. I smiled finding it adorable.

I stopped at the top of the stairs and worked on catching my breath. Satotz navigated to the front of the crowd of applicants.

"The numere Wetlands also known as swindlers swamp. We must cross these wetlands to reach phase 2 of the exam. This place is known to many bizarre creatures. Many of them being cunning, insatiable creatures who deceive humans and pray upon them. Be very careful. If you let them fool you, you're dead." Satotz explained.

The gate leading into the tunnel started to close and there were a few failed applicants desperately trying to get through who didn't make it in time. I looked away, ignoring it.

"These wetlands creatures will use every trick in the book to fool their pray. An ecosystem in which creatures obtain food through deceit. Hence the name swindlers swamp. Stay close to me so you won't be lost or deceived"

The tall man who was wearing the suit shouted, "How do you expect us to fall for their tricks when we're expecting them?"

"Don't let them fool you!" said a man whom surprised everyone; looking injured and exhausted. Pulling something behind him by the corner of the wall.

"Don't fall for it. He's lying to you! He's an imposter! He isn't the examiner, I am!" the man yelled. My instincts didn't trust him, so I was going to stick with Satotz. 

"Look at this!" he dragged out a creature looking like Satotz

"It's a man faced ape, one of the creatures that dwell in the numere wetlands." he exclaimed.

"Man faced apes loves the taste of human flesh. However, their limbs are long and thin so they're quite weak. That's why they disguise themselves as humans. They trick humans into following them into these wetlands where they team up with other animals to kill and eat them. He intends to trap every single applicant!" he half shouted.

I sighed about the fact that so many people were believing him. Suddenly cards were flying; three at both the examiner and the imposter.

Satotz caught the cards with ease while the imposter was killed with his monkey like creature scuttling into the forest. I glance in the direction the cards had been thrown from- the clown guy had thrown them.

"A so-called examiner is a hunter hired by the selection committee to serve as a volunteer. Anyone with the title of hunter should be able to easily deflect that kind of attack~" he explained to me and the other applicants watching. Once he was done explaining he glanced over at me and winked. I looked away. Satotz gave him a warning for attacking an examiner.

Satotz turned walking into the forest picking up the walk to a run. me and the other applicants followed. I did my best to stay within 5 feet of him since I didn't feel like getting lost or eaten at the time. I heard the screams of other applicants as they failed to stay with Satotz. 

After a little bit of running, we arrived in front of some large gates with a little clearing the applicants and I -who were right behind him- gathered in the clearing. Satotz stood waiting for other applicants to come out from the forest. I leaned against a tree closing my eyes, I'm not tired but I liked relaxing like this; it helped me hone certain senses such as hearing. After a little bit of waiting, I reopened my eyes to the gates were opening. I pushed away from the tree and walked through the gates with the other applicants.

The second phase was beginning.
