The second phase

The second phase of the hunter exam was beginning. The gate opened and the applicants and I walked through into a large yard. There was a large building with a red roof and a cream white-yellow paint on the outside of it. In the giant yard there were cooking stations- lots of them.

Guess we'll be cooking than. I wasn't a very good cook, and I didn't enjoy it, but I viewed myself as decent.

A woman with mint green hair and green eyes was lounging on a red couch. A tall, big man was behind her wearing a yellow t-shirt.

"Welcome All!" the woman exclaimed with a smile.

"I'm Menchi, your examiner for the second phase." she introduced herself.

The man behind her spoke up.

"And Likewise, I'm buhara" he said loudly.

The applicants stared at them silently awaiting the instructions for the second phase.

Buhara's stomach growled loudly, and the crowd erupted with whispering.

"Sounds like you're hungry." Menchi commented

"More than hungry, I'm starving" Buhara replied

"Well, there you have it the second phase will be cooking"

An applicant in the crowd started shouting:

"What do you mean we're cooking?! We came here to take the hunter exam!" he yelled, a bitter tone in his voice.

"That's right, the second phase of the exam will be preparing a meal that'll satisfy our tastes."

"Why do we have to cook?" he asked again.

I decided to use my amazing skill of selective hearing to not listen to the explanation until she tells us what we're cooking. After a minute of explaining and bickering, Buhara took a step forward.

"Todays required ingredient will be pork." Buhara said.

"Feel free to use any species of pig in this forest. As you see, you'll use these cooking utensils to prep your pork dishes. To pass the exam you must create a dish to satisfy our differing tastes" Buhara explained.

"But we won't be evaluating on tastes alone, so take this seriously. When we've both eaten our fill, this portion of the exam will be over" Menchi pointed out.

"Okay let's just get to it all right?"

"Let the second phase of the exam begin!"

The other participants and I all ran out of the little yard back into the forest. The fog had dispersed, and I ran straight forward before slowing down and beginning my search. After a few minutes of searching, a stampede of them ran through the trees towards me. I saw other participants killing it by hitting its forehead, so I copied them and got myself a pig quickly. I carefully carried it back with me to the yard, where the rest of the applicants were heading.

We all went to a station and began cooking I noticed most people were just roasting it whole and putting it on a plate with salt and pepper. I roasted my pig but before putting it on a plate I cut it up neatly and looked at the seasonings there weren't a whole lot of things I could use to season it so I had to hope salt and pepper with some roasted veggies would be alright. I put the roasted foods on a plate and walked up in line to serve it. In front of me the blondie, green hair, and suited man were all in line with wildly decorated meals. Blondies looked like a sandwich. I waited patiently, but Menchi disposed of all of them just like the rest. Buhara ate all the ones she threw out. I set my dish down on the small table in front of them and waited to hope it would work out fine. Menchi tried a piece of it.

"it's good, cooked meat BUT WHERE ARE THE SEASONINGS?! WHERE IS THE UNIQUE FLAVOR?!" she yelled angrily throwing the plate again. I turned walking back to my station while she started yelling, lecturing us all. 

And- of course that picky little brat failed all of us. There were multiple protests and the man that had argued before, got all up in her face before Buhara punched him away from her. I grumbled in annoyance.

There was an airship flying above us, it had the hunter's association logo on it. A man started his falling descent from the ship. I watched him as he landed. He had gray hair, long eyebrows and a gray beard. and his shoes- how did he walk or so much as fall out of the sky and land on his feet with those on?!

He chatted with Menchi and I didn't pay attention to their conversation. Pretty soon, we were all boarding the airship and beginning on our way to split mountain for the second phase redo: to make some boiled eggs.

On the airship I sat down in the hallway watching out the window, when I felt like I was being watched. I turned to look around me, and #44 the clown was right behind me. I flinched in surprise.

 He smiled at me in a friendly way and in turn I relaxed a little bit. He sat down next to me, with me turning my attention back to the window. I could feel him watching my face and I let my hair fall in my face partially blocking me from his view.

"Well~ are you going to introduce yourself~?" he asked, with a small smirk spread across his face.

I watched his face for a moment before responding.

"My names y/n. What's yours?" I replied.

"I'm Hisoka~" he responded, obviously expecting me to continue the conversation. I didn't. I let it drop.

He went quiet, telling that I felt a bit uneased. After a minute or 2 of silence, he moved a lock of hair out of my face and I gave him a questioning look, before standing up and walking away. I walked down the hall into a large room where most of the other participants were. I walked across the room glancing behind me. Luckily, he hadn't followed me. Pretty soon we arrived at split mountain for the 2nd phase.

"This is it. Take a look at what's down in there." Menchi said while looking over the edge of the cliff.

I looked down; in the split of the mountains there were webs.

"A spider eagles web. " there was a strong updraft of wind knocking a few applicants back away from the edge.

 "those are spider eagle eggs." she said smugly. I looked past the webs and there were- eggs?

"Spider eagles lay their eggs in deep ravines like these to help protect the eggs from predators that's why they are one of the most difficult ingredients to acquire. spider eggs are also known as dream eggs." the old man who had dropped from the airship explained.

Menchi jumped over the side of the ravine, and I watched her with curiosity; she grabbed one of the webs slowing her fall- before holding onto a string of web and staying there. Many of the applicants "oo" -ed and "ah" -ed in interest and curiosity. She stayed where she was for a moment and then she dropped falling towards one of the eggs. She caught the egg, and fell into the misty fog of the ravine. There was another large updraft of air and she flew back up with it. She landed on her feet gracefully, with the egg in hand.

Multiple people jumped off the cliff edge toward the webs and I decided to join the applicants jumping. As I fell, I heard Menchi yell out "Wait!" welp too late for that. 

As the web got closer, I grabbed hold of it, slowing the fall before grabbing onto the string of web below me. I waited for a sign of an updraft of air. I closed my eyes trusting my instincts, a few people got impatient as the string started to snap under our weight. I felt my hair move a little in the wind and let go just as the kid with green hair shouted to go. I grabbed an egg and fell. The updraft shot me into the air and I landed harshly on the ground at the top of the cliff. I tried landing on my feet but of course me, being me I didn't land on my feet rather than my butt.

I stood up hearing a snicker from Hisoka who was staring at me. I looked away a little embarrassed, it really wasn't hard- I just wasn't paying enough attention or care as to how I landed. Whatever; I'd be fine it doesn't matter.

The eggs were extremely good. Very filling and tasty. The participants and I who passed got on the airship that would be taking us onto the next phase.

Phase 3 was about to begin.
