Chapter 5
'This freak has now pulled me into more trouble, given me clothes that are about to tear at the seams and is creeping me out. Can you at least tell me your name! You spoilt brat!'
While Cher was enjoying the quiet attitude that Caddie naturally displayed outwardly, Caddie's mind was full of insults directed at this person who had barged into her already sucky day. Cher had always been the overly friendly type when approaching strangers, a trait that made Caddie overly uncomfortable. How should she feel about this girl?
Cher's personality clashed with Caddie's so much so, to the point Caddie had actually grown a not-so-slight irritation towards her. A rare emotion she'd hardly ever shown on her face.
'I'm starting to question her motives.'
While Caddie was endlessly beating a dead horse, Cher had already returned and had sat down next to her.
""Hey! You look like you've seen a murder!""
'Yeah, but I'm the victim in this case and you're the suspicious forensic pathologist that tampered with my samples- '
A quiet yelp escaped Caddie's mouth as she jumped in her seat, clutching her heart in surprise. This action made Cher again, laugh that fake sounding laugh.
Teasing the already alarmed girl sitting next to her.
""You should really be more aware of your surroundings. One day you just might have a reason to jump in fright!""
Caddie immediately wiped any fear from her mind.
'This person, although they are being uncomfortably nice to me, and are saying...questionable things. I don't get the feeling she wants to harm me, at least not right now.'
With that thought, the recently deceased fear had reincarnated, now unassailable.
""So Caddie, I know this might be over the line, since we've only just met...well talked.. to-no...uh...you get what I mean. I want to ask, the day I smashed my face into that wall, why were you crying?""
Caddie's shoulders tensed, not expecting to be asked about something that should be such an insignificant thing to the other.
A small 'um' noise came out of her mouth as she searched for where she had last placed her notebook.
Cher read the vague response she was given.
"It wasn't anything important. I'd just forgotten my lunch that day."
'That's clearly a lie!'
She didn't want to tell her the reason so Cher ended the conversation with a 'oh..'.
They sat in silence on those chairs for what felt like an hour. Cher finally spoke up, cheerful as ever.
""There's this café, and it sells the best scones- jam, cream and all. It's not that far away do you wanna go? ...I'll pay!""
Caddie's face brightened instantly, nodding aggressively.
Caddie had a massive sweet tooth, to the point where, if she saw a man offering free candy on the street she'd happily jump into his van, no questions asked.
Cher's pupils dilated, seeing how much emotion this girl could actually express, it was as if time had reversed eleven years and she was now as innocent as she could be. Cher had to turn her head from Caddie so as to not look the girl in the eye.
Caddie was confused by this action and passed a note to Cher.
"What are you doing?"
With just the mention of scones Caddie had warmed right up to Cher, even trying to gain back the eye contact they had lost when Cher turned away. Cher's ears grew hot from Caddie's sudden and unexpected actions.
'Personal space! Where did that scared little rabbit from before go!'
Cher squeaked out a sentence before again turning her head, looking into the distance.
""Too much sweetness and now you've given me a cavity!""
Caddie was now completely lost, scribbling aggressively on her notebook.
"You have a toothache?..so we can't go to the cafe?"
As Cher read the note she'd been passed, she stole a few glances at Caddie. The girl looked heartbroken, tears were building in her eyes.
""No, no that's not what I meant! We can still go! My teeth are fine!"
Hearing this the tears in Caddie's eyes evaporated immediately. She'd jumped out of her seat before ushering Cher with some aggressive hand movements to hurry up.
Author's Comments:
<I realized as I've been polishing these first few chapters that I hadn't conveyed their personalities and the hints at their backstories/motives very well. So a lot of these chapters will have plenty of new content!>
