(I recommend putting this song on loop!)
The trolley slowed down to a hiss. The cool salty breeze hit Marie's face as she stepped out. She waved to the trolley driver and walked forwards. Marie stopped walking and noticed the sound of the trolley leaving didn't come. She turned around and looked at the trolley driver, still there. He waved back.
Marie furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. She shrugged it off and continued to walk towards the church. She was stopped in her tracks by her phone ringing. Marie pulled her phone out and answered the call. "Hello?"
"Hey sweetie, I'm down at the beach. Would you mind coming to see me?"
Marie opened her mouth to say something, but stopped. "What- Mom? What...you said to meet you at the church. I'm already here."
"No, I'm at the beach. Just take the trolley back quickly and go to the beach we always go to."
"Uh- ok? I'll be there...I guess?" Marie looked around to see if anyone was there.
"Great. Love you sweetheart."
Marie's mom hung up.
Marie scoffed. "Okay? I uh- what the hell is going on?"
"Hey kid!"
Marie swiveled around to face the trolley.
"Hop in! I'll take you to the beach," the trolley driver said.
Marie sighed and hopped back in the trolley. She stared out at the sunset-painted sky as the cool wind blew her hair out.
"Here we are. Have fun kid."
Marie managed to form a smile through her confusion. "Thanks." She hopped off the trolley and took her flip-flops off to head down the sandy stairs. She jumped down and felt the grainy sand push in between her toes. She trudged along the shore.
This makes ZERO sense. I was literally told to come see my mom at the church, then she calls me and randomly goes, "Oh, why don't you NOT go to the church and instead travel all the way back to the beach?" Because that TOTALLY makes sense. And why the heck did the trolley guy WAIT for me?! Like huh? I don't even know anymore-
Marie looked up and hitched her breath. Her thoughts vanished. The sound of cold saltwater waves crashing against the shore faded away. The feeling of sand numbed under her feet.
"Hey."
Marie blinked again.
"Hey?"
"Haha, you say that like I'm not standing here."
"You- you came back?"
Tommy stepped forwards. "Yeah, I did."
Marie felt the warmth growing in her chest. "You...you surprised me?"
"Yeah, that's what this is."
Marie rolled her eyes. "You really know how to diffuse a moment."
"What?! I was just stating the obvious."
"Okay Mr. Obvious, tell me why you came back."
Tommy sighed. "Isn't it obvious?"
Marie smirked. Tommy rolled his eyes. "Oh god I forgot the about obvious pun already."
Marie laughed and pushed Tommy. "Okay okay continue."
Tommy took a breath. "I came here to see you."
"Obviously."
"OH COME ON!" Tommy laughed and watched as Marie finished laughing.
"I'm so sorry I'm too good I'm too good okay NOW tell me." Marie collected herself and waited for Tommy's response.
"I missed you too much. So I came back. And you did mention being lonely. And how you feel like my presence needs to be next to yours. So here we are."
Marie smiled softly. "You remembered."
Tommy smiled. "I did." He turned to look at the endless sea.
Marie tapped on his shoulder. Tommy looked back at Marie and raised his eyebrows.
Marie smiled and leaned forwards. "You're being all melty for me again."
"AM NOT!"
Marie laughed and sighed. "Yes you are. And you know it."
"Fine, fine. Maybe I am. But who cares." Tommy held both of Marie's hands.
"You don't care?" Marie gazed into Tommy's eyes.
"I don't."
The world faded away.
Tommy smiled. "Some people are worth melting for."
Marie felt the warmth in her heart grow bigger. "That was so cheesy did you really quote Olaf from Frozen?"
Tommy rolled his eyes. "I'm not good at this stuff okay?"
Marie held his face and sighed. "I know."
Tommy took Marie's hands and held them. "Marie, will you be my girlfriend?"
Marie smiled even bigger. "Of course you idiot."
Tommy grinned. "And Marie, we might be too young or whatever, but..."
"But...what?"
"But..." Tommy looked down at his hands holding Marie's.
I love you.
...
I love you too.
