1997
After another successful Fleetwood Mac show under their belts and a lovely dinner to finish the night off, Lindsey walked into his hotel room with a sigh of relief. As much as he loved his bandmates, he still valued his alone time. Or alone time with Stevie. They just sort of picked up where they had left off. A night of reminiscing with a couple of bottles of wine, innocent little touches, timid kisses and they were once again sneaking around to be together as often as they could.
Stevie and Lindsey hadn't made plans to meet up later. He was quite tired and she seemed a little off too. He had asked if everything was okay and received a shrug of her shoulders for a response. However, the second Lindsey got into bed, an impatient knock on the door echoed around the room. He rose back to his feet, a smirk on his face. He knew, she couldn't resist him.
"Missed me already?" Lindsey grinned, holding onto the door handle.
Without a word, Stevie pushed him back inside and closed the door behind her. He liked, where things were going, but the expression on her face worried him.
"What's going on?" Lindsey asked, quickly realizing that they weren't about to engaged in passionate love making. Again, completely silent, Stevie dumped three items into his hand, which he was just fast enough to hold up, before she let go of them. "What are..." He trailed off, gulping. "Whose are they?"
"Whose? Mine, Lindsey! They're mine!" Stevie glared at him, shocked at his idiocy during moments like this one. "I wouldn't have just dropped three positive pregnancy tests into your hands if they were someone else's, now, would I?"
Suddenly, Lindsey felt as if the room had started spinning and Stevie's pacing didn't help. He moved as if in slow motion over to the bed and sat down. "Positive. Pregnancy tests." He swallowed uneasily again and lifted his eyes up to look at her. "But... I mean... how can they be? You're..."
"Old? Yeah, I know." Stevie scoffed, folding her arms over her chest. "I didn't think we needed to be careful still." She slumped down besides him with a heavy sigh. "I was absolutely sure that the symptoms were an indication of menopause." She ran a hand through her hair, shaking her head.
"Wait, symptoms?" Lindsey frowned, putting the three small sticks away.
"Yeah, you know... women stuff." She shrugged, suddenly overcome with emotions she hadn't allowed herself to feel while alone in her room.
"I'm not really sure what to say." He mimicked her, resting his elbows on his knees, sitting hunched over.
Jumping to her feet again, Stevie walked over to the window, hugging herself around the middle. "I'll have my assistant to make a doctor's appointment."
"So, this is not a hundred percent yet?"
"I need all the confirmation I can get. And what if it is true?" Stevie asked, for some reason afraid to see Lindsey's reaction. "What then? The band has just reunited, I have solo commitments, you have solo commitments, there's a chance I am too old to do this, there could be complica-" She stopped herself, when he quietly came to stand behind her, his arms circling her waist.
"You're not too old, there might not be a single complication. And to hell with commitments." Lindsey said, lowering his chin onto her shoulder.
A weak smile tugged at her lips, she lay her hands over his. "I need you to be honest, Linds. I want you to tell me, how you truly feel about this."
"All I know is that I'm the happiest I've been in a very long time. We're in a good place. I mean, we haven't actually talked about it, but I feel like we're pretty much together again. Having a family with you has always been my biggest dream, Steph, you know that." He pulled back and spun her around in his embrace. "I'm sorry for the way I reacted. Or didn't react. I just, honestly, I didn't think this was still a possibility."
Breathing a sigh of relief, Stevie locked her hands at the nape of his neck and drew him back closer. "If it's true, if I'm..." It felt weird saying such thing out loud. "If I'm really carrying your baby, you have to promise me that you'll be there, Linds. I don't think that I could possibly do this on my own."
Separating them again slightly, Lindsey cradled her face in the palms of his hands. "There's no other place I'd rather be, Stevie."
She smiled a little, then cast her eyes down. "Can I stay here with you tonight?"
"That's a bit silly to ask, don't you think? Considering." Lindsey teased, achieving a greater smile from her.
"Also, let's not get our hopes up too high, okay?"
He could tell she was scared and he could also see, how badly she wanted for that doctor she was going to see to deliver her the good news. "Promise."
