Lindsey barely glanced at Stevie as she knocked on his door and entered the room later that night. His lips remained sealed as he returned to scribbling away on his notepad. She slowly made her way over to him, like a dog with its tail between its legs after some sort of an accident.
"Hey." Stevie spoke up first and again, Lindsey lifted his eyes up only for a short second. "I'm sorry about earlier. I was upset."
"What could you have possibly been upset about?" Lindsey asked, crossing out a word or a couple.
"Well, hearing your wife call me an old whore wasn't particularly nice." Stevie reached for his notepad and pulled it out of his hand. He sighed then pursed his lips. "I didn't want to hear any of what was said between you two."
"And I tried telling her that I didn't want to listen to it either." Lindsey moved slightly to his right, so Stevie could sit down. "But... don't take it the wrong way, but you didn't hear anything new."
"You're right." She shrugged, clasping her hands together. "Would it make sense if I told you that I'm scared that there's no longer anything or anyone standing in our way?"
Looking at her for a moment, Lindsey shook his head. "Well, no, not to me, but you and I have been known to have different opinions on most of things."
A small smile crossed her lips, she then moved to lie down beside him and he didn't hesitate to wrap an arm around her. "It's much easier, when there's someone to blame, you know? And if it's just you and I, we've only got ourselves to blame."
"What I don't understand is why are you so sure that we're going to fail?"
"Hope for the best, expect the worst?" Stevie tilted her chin up to see Lindsey rolling his eyes. "Well, we haven't exactly worked out in the past."
"I'm prepared to make things work this time, Stevie. I'm leaving my wife for you. What else do you want from me?"
She sensed his frustration, which was understandable. Bringing a hand up to touch the side of his face, she turned his head slightly and reached up to press a small kiss to his lips.
"It's not about that. I couldn't possibly ask any more of you. I'm just afraid, okay? Maybe the fear is not justified, but it's how I feel, Lindsey. If anything, I'd never thought you'd go through with this. I was sure that you just kept feeding me the same old lie, so I stayed with you." Her honesty came as a sad surprise to him, but he let her finish. "I thought, we'd have our fun and once this record is finished, we'd go our separate ways. I'd never dreamed that this could finally turn into something."
A moment of silence passed, when Lindsey opened his mouth. "It upsets me that you have so little faith in us."
"Can you blame me?" He sighed, shrugging his shoulders. "I swear to you, I'll try and do everything so we make our relationship work this time. But what I mean by saying that I'm scared is that you can never know, what the future holds."
"It better have no plans for us. May our life be as boring as possible."
Stevie laughed lightly, draping her leg over his, she lay her head on his chest. "I wholeheartedly agree."
"You do know that I would do absolutely anything for you, right?" He asked, pressing a kiss to her hair.
She nodded. "Likewise."
"I'm going to ask you once again, Steph, don't shut me out, okay? If there's something on your mind, please, talk to me." His hold on her tightened. "We're too old to be fighting through a closed door."
"Promise." Stevie said, cuddling up to him closer.
