Phil tried to hold back his tears as he drove home. He couldn't let his parents see him, especially because he was crying over a boy. When he parked in the driveway to his house, he sat in the car for a few minutes.

He told himself over and over that he didn't need to cry over this, but it didn't work. He did eventually manage to stop crying, and he hurried in the house before he started again. He quietly closed the door behind him, hoping his parents wouldn't hear him. But of course, as soon as he shut the front door behind him his mother walked out of the kitchen.

"Hello dear," she said. When she noticed Phil's puffy eyes, she added, "is something wrong?"

Phil could see the concern in her eyes, but he didn't want her to worry. "I'm fine Mum. I just stubbed my toe in the school parking lot," he lied. He took off his shoes and placed them by the door.

"Dinner should be ready around the time when your father gets home," his mom said. When Phil didn't reply, she placed her hand on his shoulder. "Phil, honey what's wrong? Did something happen at school?"

"It's- it's nothing." Phil wiggled away from her hand and tried to perk up a bit by smiling. It didn't seem to help.

His mother sighed. "It doesn't seem like nothing to me," she said, concern all over her face.

Phil hesitated. How could he possibly tell her what's going on? Would she even accept the fact that he loved a boy? Even Phil himself hadn't fully accepted it. But what was the big deal? She is his mother, he should be able to tell her anything. Phil didn't know what to say even if he was to tell her. Then he wondered then if he should wait until his dad got home; then he could tell both his parents at the same time.

With all these thoughts swarming in his head, he forgot he was standing there with his mom.

"Dammit!" He mumbled. He then came back to reality and freaked. "Oh my god I'm an idiot." He began pacing the floor nervously. "Mum, I'm such an idiot!"

He didn't stop pacing until she firmly placed both hands on his shoulders and looked into his eyes. She pulled him into a brief hug and then released him. "Let's go sit down at the table and talk," she suggested. Phil nodded, and a tear rolled down his face.

Phil was sitting at the dinning room table, a glass of warm milk in front of him. He was no longer crying but had the occasional sniffle. His mother came in with a pack of Oreos and sat them in front of Phil. Then she took a seat across from him.

"Okay darling," she said, her voice gentle. "Would you like to wait for Dad to get home?"

Phil shook his head slightly and took an Oreo from the pack. He held it delicately in his fingers and examined it.

"What's wrong honey?" She asked, trying to will an answer out of him. "You know I'm here to listen and help if I possibly can."

Phil was silent for a minute before whispering, "I have a friend... And..."

"And what?" His mother asked.

Again he was silent. Phil dipped the Oreo cookie into the milk, but dropped it all the way in when he said," Mum I think I'm gay."

He glanced up at his mother who was staring at him. She processed the information and then said, "well I think it's wonderful that's you're figuring things out. So do you have feelings for that friend you mentioned?"

Phil stared at the cookie in the glass of milk and slowly nodded. Before it got too soggy, Phil removed the cookie from the milk and popped it in his mouth. He then looked at his mother.

"What's his name?" She wondered. Interest filled her eyes, and Phil could tell he'd made the right choice to tell her.

"You know my friend, Dan?" Phil asked. His mother only nodded, so he continued, "It's kind of funny actually. I didn't think he'd change me, but he did. Ever since I started hanging out with him things have been different." Phil's eyes lit up when talking about Dan, and he felt his face grow warmer.

A smile spread across her face. "Like I said before, I'm glad you're figuring things out. So, what's the problem?"

"Well," Phil looked away so he wouldn't see his mom's reaction. "Well... Me and Dan made a few youtube videos together... And we cuddled... And I sorta kissed him..."

Phil noticed that his mom couldn't stop smiling. She asked him, "did you see the colors?"

"Oh yes!" He sat up straighter and smiled. "It's so beautiful. But... He doesn't see the colors around me... He's dating Louise."

"Well," she told him, "don't get too down about it. Maybe he will eventually realize that he loves you too."

"Yeah. I hope so."
