"I don't like the colors," Dan said as he watched the ceiling fan spin slowly. "I mean, I like them, but I hate how I can only see them with you."
Phil wasn't sure how to reply, so he didn't. Instead he remained on the floor, leaning against Dan's bed. Sprawled across the mattress was Dan with his feet hanging off near Phil's head. The two of them had been in those positions for almost two hours while Dan had a terrible existential crisis.
"What causes the colors?" Dan mumbled to the ceiling. "Is it maybe like a hormone?" He paused to let idea that sink in. "Do you get what I'm saying, Phil?"
Phil considered the idea for a moment, but could not figure out what Dan was trying to imply. "No, please explain."
Dan blinked and swallowed at the same time, both of which he had not done in a while. "Well both of us know, being guys, that when we become aroused we get boners. Maybe it's like that. When we really really love a person we see colors. Make sense?"
"So you're saying that colors are like dicks?" Phil chuckled.
"Yeah..." Dan then flopped over onto his stomach and wiggled off the bed. He hit the floor with a thump, then laid flat on his stomach with his arms by his side. He looked up at Phil and his captivating eyes.
Phil had once told Dan that his eyes looked like the coffee they had been sipping and that they'd taste wonderful if they were. That made Dan laugh and then question why people had different colored eyes. He thought about this as he lay on the floor in his crisis; he couldn't ponder what caused the colors. His theory that he had explained to Phil made sense but still left questions. Dan was determined to find the answers to all his questions, but he knew he would never get them.
There was a knock on the door. A voice followed. "Dan, sweetie a letter came in the mail for you."
Dan grunted as he pulled himself up off the floor. He cracked the bedroom door enough to stick his hand out for the letter. He gave a simple "thanks, mom" and then shut the door again. When Dan turned around, Phil was sitting cross legged on the bed. His hair was a mess, which made Dan smile. Sometimes he found himself staring at Phil in awe; everything about him was perfect to Dan. His voice, laugh, smile, eyes, and so much more- it all made Dan happy to exist in the world (even if he didn't understand why they existed).
"Who is it from?" Phil asked politely, interrupting Dan's thoughts. He hadn't realized he was standing there just staring at Phil. Oh well, he thought. Dan sat beside his boyfriend and examined the envelope. It was an average envelope kept shut with a messy wax seal. The number 1 had been engraved in the red wax but was barely readable.
"No idea," Dan mumbled as he tore the envelope open. "There's no return address."
"Weird," Phil commented. He picked up the envelope and studied the wax seal as Dan read the typed letter aloud.
"'It has come to our attention that you have information that you should not.'" Dan looked up at Phil. "That's all it says, Phil."
"Here, let me see." Phil's eyes scanned the paper for a moment and then focused back on Dan. "Who would send a letter like this? It doesn't make sense."
In Dan's mind all he could think was 'what the hell does this person want?' A sigh escaped his lips.
"It's probably just a prank," He suggested. "Joe and Tyler are most likely doing this. Let's just forget it for now.""No Dan, this is seriously weird. It doesn't seem like a prank the two of then would pull." Phil put the strange letter back inside the torn envelope and set it on the nightstand.
"Okay, okay." Dan put his hands up and added a slight shrug as if to show defeat. "It's weird, I'll admit. But let's just give it a few days and see what happens. Okay?"
"Fine. But if in the next few days aliens attack your house and abduct your family, remember I told you so."
Dan couldn't hold back his laugh. "Where on Earth did you get that idea?"
Phil put his finger in the air the way he does when trying to prove his point. "Actually, aliens are from space, not Earth. So the idea technically came from outer space."
"What?" Dan's face showed how much he was cringing on the inside, but he was still giggling at Phil's strangeness. "Phil, that doesn't make any sense!"
"But what if..." Dramatic pause from Phil as his finger waited patiently in the air. "ALIENS ARE ACTUALLY ON EARTH?" He widened his eyes to add to the effect.
Dan made the "dun dun DUN" sound and then they both were laughing.
"But it's totally possible!" Phil told Dan. "How did we get on Earth? Aliens obviously."
"I don't know, but I wish I did." Dan sighed, but was still smiling at Phil.
"Oh, that reminds me. There's a new horror game out about aliens. I think we should play it." Phil wasn't a horror game type of person, but he wanted this one.
Dan raised his eyebrow and asked, "wouldn't you rather play a game about badgers or something? You're not much into horror, and I don't want you to waste money on it if you're not going to play it enough."
"Please Dan. I'll even let you keep it, so when I come over we can play it." Phil begged with his puppy dog face. After a while of convincing, Dan was driving them to the nearest store that sold video games.
As they got out of the car, Dan noticed a woman was sat on a bench near the store entrance, and she was staring at him. When they made eye contact she pretended to be reading the newspaper in her hands, but her eyes still followed Dan. He whispered to Phil, "there's a woman over there on that bench, and I think she's stalking me; she keeps looking right at me."
Phil shrugged and suggested, "maybe she knows you from YouTube. After all, you have been gaining tons of subscribers lately. Why don't we go introduce ourselves?"
Something in Dan's gut told him not to approach the woman, but he still followed Phil as he walked right up to her. "Good afternoon! I'm Phil, and this is Dan."
The woman placed the newspaper on the bench next to her and stood. She held out her hand for Phil to shake. "I'm Cat. I already know who you two are: the nerdy boys on YouTube. Yeah, I'm a big fan."
The way she smiled sent shivers down Dan's spine. She was a creep- he could tell- and he was scared she would make a move on one of them. He told himself he was just being paranoid and needed to calm down. To make an escape from the conversation, he would say he needed to find a washroom- which wouldn't be a lie.
But Cat spoke first, "well I better be off. Got tons of errands to do. It was nice meeting you two!" And then she was walking away, leaving her newspaper on the bench.
Thunder growled in the clouds, and the sky was turning grayish. Phil turned to Dan. "Come on, Dan we'd better get inside before it rains on us."
