"Poor little 'ole Satan is worried about a small, useless human." Semis mused as he stepped toward Cade.
"Don't touch him." I growled.
"You mean like this?" The demon gave me a lazy smirk before placing his hand on Cade's head.
When my love flinched it took every ounce of control I had not to rip Semis to shreds.
"Wow, quite the rebel." I bit at him before my phone slipped out of my pocket.
Oops.
I bent down to pick it up, "Sorry about that, it always falls out of my pocket." I sighed dramatically as I leaned back up.
Semis was looking at me like I was stupid.
"What? Wanna hold it?" I threw it to him and he caught it with narrowed eyes.
"What are you-" before he could finish Lila broke free from the two demons holding her and dived at the demon who held his claws against Cade's neck.
They crashed to the ground and in the next moment I had Cade pressed against me. He clung to my shirt as if his life depended on it and in a way, I guess I did.
Semis dove toward me with menace. The jokester asshole was gone and replaced with pure malice and rage.
He was pissed off.
Good.
"You always know how to screw up a good plan, Lucifer." I skidded to the left with Cade in my arms before I placed him behind me.
Lila took her stance beside Cade and I took off toward the demon who was set on ruining my relationship with Cade.
He dodged left seconds before my fist collided with his jaw- which would have been so satisfying.
His movements were sharper and angrier than before when they were lazy and more carefree.
I had definitely pissed him off but I couldn't understand why.
He threw both of his hands out and with them can a wave of red magic. It raced toward me in a zig zag motion in which I countered-with impeccable grace, may I add-with my own magic set as a shield in front of me.
He magic clashed against mine and then bounced back at him. He slipped it but it ended up grazing the edge of his arm.
He didn't flinch, but he did bare his teeth at me- canines and all.
I bared mine back.
Haha, Bitch. You're not special.
"You think you're so special." Ah, he read my mind... sort of.
"Well, you certainly aren't." I shrugged my shoulders before launching another attack at him.
My magic slammed into him and sent him backwards. The moment he hit the ground he was up again, arms out. I widened my stance and readied another shield.
He slid his hands apart and threw out an attack instead. I dodged it and he aimed his magic at me again. I could hear my own crackling in my ears as I pulled it from within me. The air around us went cold as we both drew on our own power.
He pushed a hand toward me and I blocked but nothing happened. I watched in horror as his other hand outstretched in a different direction- at Cade.
I let out a roar as I turned and attempted to block the ball of magic that was hurdling straight for Cade.
It seemed to happen in slow motion.
Semis' attack knocked Cade into the air. My attack only half a second too late but that was all it took.
I jumped and caught a stunned Cade mid air. We landed with a hard thump.
Everything went silent as I laid my love on the pavement.
"Cade?" My voice came out horse.
For a moment he there was no answer. My heart sped up.
"Ki-Kitty." He struggled to speak.
His chest rose and fell erratically. His eyes were squeezed shut. His veins were laced with black. Black that snaked out from under his shirt trailing up his neck and down his arms.
"It's okay. It'll be okay." I shushed him. My mind running a million miles a minute.
I was unable to heal him. My magic was made to harm- not heal.
At that moment I would have given up anything to heal Cade.
I would have given up everything.
Why the hell had I never learned any healing spells?
"It hurts." My love panted. He had his hand wrapped in my shirt, his grip so tight I was surprised my shirt was still together.
"I know- I know. I-," Panic settled in me like a stone.
I pulled his head onto my lap. My hands were shaking.
"It's- It's okay, Kitty." Cade coughed, his body racking with the force, he continued, "I'm glad we got to meet."
Guilt ran through me. If we had not met he would not be dying.
"No." I started but he pressed a weak hand against my chest.
"Please don't forget me, Lucifer." His hand began to fall.
"NO." I shouted, reaching for his hand before it fell completely, "Cade? Cade!"
I squeezed his hand helplessly. His eyes gazed into the night. Dull and empty.
"What a turn of events, huh?"
I turned my head to the sound of the voice. The voice of the demon who killed Cade.
A strange numbness settled over me as I let go of my loves lifeless body.
I was going to kill him. There would be no soul left to be sent to hell.
He would cease to exist.
indefinitely.
