Every day is simple, easy. There are no hardships here. I've never felt the burden of stress. My life is so peaceful that it feels wrong. The people who live here are too easygoing. There's nothing in the interior to motivate us. I live in a world of privilege and power. A world of traditionalism, under strict rules and boundaries. I would rebel, run away, that is if I had somewhere to go.
A few days ago, maybe a week ago, the brave men of the survey corps made their way through Stohess. My dad invited one of them home. He liked had dinner with us. He had big eyebrows and a very stern face. But he seemed friendly enough. My dad called him "Erwin". The survey corps seem so cool! They get to go out and explore and see titans. I wish I could see that sort of thing. Stohess is a paved district, not many fields or anything, a few grass patches but generally it's a very clean area. I never get to play outside because it's not ladylike. I'm not a lady! I'm twelve and bored!
Dad has been running around all day. He says that there has been a huge problem in the Shiganshina district. He's been more short with me than normal. He's nitpicking. Mum says he's stressed. But what exactly is there to stress about? Even in times of famine, we still eat like kings. What could have gone wrong?
My grandparents are visiting today too. That doesn't make Dad's frantic running about the house, coming in for five minutes and not coming back for hours any easier on any of us. I don't get along with my family. My grandparents don't like me. Mum's family don't like Dad so much because he wasn't from the interior originally. But mum was. Sometimes they acknowledge my dad's achievements. It takes a lot of strength to become the commander of the military police. Dad said to Mr Erwin that him obtaining his position must have been easier to get, since apparently the leaders of the survey corps die a lot. Dad had to strive in a new place to gain a good rank and capture my mum's heart. Or at least that's what he says.
Dinner is always samey in the interior. Some sort of meat, usually either chicken or horse and whatever has recently been harvested. Today mum has made a horse meat stew with carrots in it. It's really good but it loses it's appeal when you eat it for three days in a row. We're all sat down to dinner right now, dad's fiddling with his silverware and being chided for it by Grandma.
"Will you be quiet, Edna! We have a crisis on our hands! The titans have breached Wall Maria and the mission to reclaim the district of Shiganshina is a bust!" Dad begins to yell at my grandma. Her face crumples up as if she's just smelt something foul.
"Oh there it is! The rudeness! The rudeness that comes from being raised in squalor! This is the true face of our daughter's husband! The lout from Wall ROSE!" My father makes a fist.
"We'll be taking our leave now." My grandfather steers my grandmother from the room. The front door opens and out they go, leaving only my parents and I in the house.
I guess that now is as good a time as ever, especially since Dad's sad.
"Dad..." I reach my hand out to place it on his shoulder, but restrict myself ands take a deep breath. "Dad I- I heard that the training corps are recruiting.
"I KNEW this would happen!" Dad slams his fists on the table. "For the love of Sina, have you lost your mind?"
I yelp, taken aback by his outburst.
"Nile? Is something wrong?" my heavily pregnant mother asks from her place in the kitchen.
"Don't you worry Marie, it's okay. I'm just paying penance for my stupidity."
"Oh? What's wrong?" Mum comes into view, hand over her bulging stomach.
"I shouldn't have invited Erwin over!"
"But wasn't it good to see your old friend again?" Mum asks.
"That's not the point, Marie!" Dad turns to face me, eyes narrowing. "He's corrupted you hasn't he? You want to 'give your body and mind to serve humanity on the front lines to explore and aid the survey corps'" Dad begins to imitate the way that Mr Erwin worded his speech to the men and women of Stohess before approaching me and placing his hands on my shoulders, "You want to help humanity now, don't you? DON'T YOU!?!"
"I want to be like you..." I sigh, he always thinks badly of me. It's true. I want to be like my dad. He's strong and dependable and brave.
"What rubbish." Mum scoffs.
"Mona, you won't last in the military. And even if you do, you'll never make the military police!"
"How can you say that? The threat of the titans is real, Mum...Dad you know that"
"Don't be silly Mona, this is Stohess!"
"We can't just sit around and laze away in the interior!"
"I'll have you know that I worked to get to the interior! It was no walk in the park!"
"Nile, honey, calm down, she's just a hothead."
"I am NOT a hothead!"
"Fine, go on, Mona, I'll pick you up from the training corps in a week once you drop out."
"I won't drop out! I'll do it! I'll stand against the titans! I'll show you!"
