I could just tell that me and Minho were going to get along very well- we had the same mischievous and jokey nature, after all. As I sat drinking the extremely horrible drink I looked over to the tall boy with angular eyebrows- Gally was his name I think. He was fighting with other boys in the centre of the bonfire area- being the only girl in the "Glade", I felt I had to assert my confidence and show that I was strong to these teenage boys."Gally!" I yelled, marching over to him confidently. "What do you want, Greenie? A fight?" To this, all of the boys laughed- they were clearly mocking me and I refused to let that happen. "In fact, yes, I do want a fight. Let's see how good you really are." I said clearly: I wanted everyone to know that I was ready. "Okay. I'll try and go easy on you seeing as you're a girl." He said patronisingly. He seemed nice enough, but his cocky attitude was really irking me. Quickly, I swept him to the floor with my leg, taking him by surprise and shocking the rest of the gladers. "Do you still think I fight like a girl?" I said, laughing. I thought I was winning, but he was good. Quickly and with surprising skill for a "builder" he dragged me down and threw me to the floor.
I was furious, of course, but that anger was short lived when I remembered something incredibly important: my name. "I remember my name!" I yelled- "Y/N!". To this, everyone cheered. I went up to shake Gally's hand. "Not bad, Greenie, not bad." He said nobly. "That's what you get for underestimating a girl. Still, you weren't to bad yourself." I said, smirking.
On cloud nine, I returned to where I was sitting with Newt- Minho had went to join the rest of the runners. "Gotta say, Greenie that was impressive. Or should I say Y/N now." He said, a huge grin on his face. "Thanks, Lizard- or should I say Newt now." To this he let out a short laugh, smiling at me. "You sure are a funny one, aren't you? The only buggin girl here and you have enough personality to outdo all of us boys." He chuckled. His eyes grew serious after this and he paused for a while, looking at me with his beautiful brown eyes. I could feel the electricity between us- like sparks that lingered in the air and butterflies which flew around erratically in my stomach.
Yet it was wrong, wasn't it? I had just met this boy a few hours earlier and I was in an unimaginably crazy situation; to feel so fondly towards someone already just seemed wrong. Nonetheless, I couldn't deny that I liked Newt: how I meant this, I didn't know yet. Minho as well- even Gally. They were all so welcoming- and, to put it simply, attractive. All I knew in that moment is that I was drawn to Newt as he gazed at me for what seemed like ages.
"Right, Greenie, you ever heard of the rules?" Newt asked. "Nope. But I would definitely like to hear them before I go and get myself in some sort of trouble." I said, chuckling. "Okay, well the first rule is that we all do our bit. No time for slacking or dillydallying when there's work to be done, you hear?" To this I rolled my eyes jokingly and he returned the joke with a smile. "Second, never harm another glader. That's self explanatory. Third, you never go into the Maze if you're not a runner. It's dangerous- if you're not good enough or fast enough you can wind up dead." Dead? How dangerous is this place? "Dead?" I said, voicing my thoughts outwardly. "Yep. Dead. There's these things- Grievers we call 'em. Big things- blubbery and bloated mechanical hybrids. And they've got these pincers and needles and knives all over their bodies- they come out at night though so you'll be fine. The doors always close at night. But even so, if you wind up in that Maze without being a runner, the consequences will be really bad."
I was in shock. What Newt had just described to me seemed like something out of a nightmare, not reality. It couldn't help but think what sort of depraved people could have wanted to do this to us. We're just kids; why were we so special? "I can sense you're worried- you're a pretty open person, you know that?" Newt said quietly. "I'm sorry, it's just it's all so crazy. It's going to take a lot of getting used to." In response to this, Newt gently took my hand and squeezed it. "Try not to worry so much. Minho and the others will introduce you to our world and how the Maze works tomorrow- you should probably get some sleep now."
"Okay. Goodnight Newt." I said, smiling at the blonde boy I saw in front of me. "Goodnight, Y/N. Or should I say Greenie." He said, returning the smile. As I walked off to the Homestead, I couldn't help but think about Newt and the others. Though the Glade seemed like a purgatory, maybe with the others with me it won't be so bad after all.
