Promise
"Turn that off please? Thank you." I said when I walked out of my office and onto the salon floor.
"It's too quiet man. Let the music play." One of my employees Tiffany said.
"Fine. Go ahead and play it." I answered while I started on my client. I didn't feel like going back and forth today.
"What are you doing this weekend Promise?" My best friend Miracle asked me.
"Nothing really. Got that dinner with my parents on Sunday."
"You do realize that sounds pitiful right? Promise my nigga you have to get a life."
"I have one."
"No you do not. If you're not working you're at your parents' house doing nothing."
"So what. I'm good with my life."
"I don't believe that. Listen I'm going to Vegas this weekend with a friend of mines. You're coming."
"I don't want to go."
"Your point? You're going. Promise Marie King do not make me go to your place and pack your clothes up my damn self."
"Why do I need to go if it's you and your friend I don't even know? That makes no sense."
"It does make sense because I said it does. You're coming with me because you're my best friend and I love you too much to let your 23 year old ass sit in the house another weekend and do absolutely nothing. I can't do it boo. Sorry not sorry."
"Fine I'll go. Can you leave me alone now?"
"Yes I can. As soon as you do my hair." She said with a big smile on her face.
Letting out a little chuckle I went back to working on my client. I really didn't want to go to Vegas. I'm not the real big party type. 23 years old I've only been to a club once and that was because Miracle made me go with her. It was alright for what it was but it wasn't anything really special as far as I was concerned.
I was more quiet, laid back and stayed to myself. My sister was the wild one. Every weekend she was in somebody's party with a drink in her hand and a blunt in the other. It's crazy how two people that shared a womb could be so different.
Cherish is everything I'm not and vice versa. I work hard and pay my own bills she chooses to live off of my parents. I went to college and cosmetology school just so I could start my own business she did nothing. She goes out and party's every day I stay home and keep to myself. I love my sister I really do but sometimes she just does way too much of nothing. Had it not been for my parents she would have nothing just because she chooses not to work for what she wants.
Do they care? No. That's another reason I work so hard. Trying to give them a reason to be proud. They don't notice it though. All they do is worry about what Cherish is doing and who's she's doing it with. It's like everything I accomplished wasn't good enough. So I have to be great. Drinking smoking and partying won't get me to greatness so I don't do it. I'm not even going to waste my time.
....
"Hi mom." I greeted her when I walked in the kitchen.
"Hey, you look pretty today."
"Thank you. Where's daddy?"
"I'm right here?" He answered while walking into the kitchen. "How are you?"
