Just as Tara Bates had said, the motel was up and running in a couple weeks. They hadn't had any guests yet, but they hoped they would soon.
Violet had planned on working the front desk, while her mother did cleaning, and her dad did maintenance work. She'd no idea what Max would do. He was always trying to get out of doing any type of work. But Violet wasn't going to let it slide this time, there was too much going on around here for him to do nothing.
“So Max, how do you plan on helping out around here?” Violet asked slyly, bracing her arms on the front desk.
Max was helping their dad hang a sign above the gutter. “I don't know, V, maybe you should let me work the front desk. Who knows, I might meet girls that way and you can help mom clean, you know, what girls are supposed to do.”
“Max,” Charlie Bates warned.
“Wow, good one. Try saying that to a group of feminists, idiot. Don't make me knock that ladder down from under your feet and we'll see who's gonna want your face now.”
“Cool it, guys!” Their dad yelled.
“It's not my fault your son is an arrogant a-hole. Try teaching him to have some respect,” Violet growled, stomping out of the office.
“V, get over here! Help me clean!” Violet heard the faint voice of her mother. Sighing, her flip-flops padded over to the motel room her mother was in.
“Max really gets on my nerves,” she complained.
“I'm sure the feeling is mutual. Grab a sponge and some gloves and get cleanin',” Tara spoke, scrubbing the floors.

The sun was setting and not one customer had even stopped to look at the motel. But still, the Bates had high hopes. Max lounged on the couch in the office, scrolling through his phone. “Like I've been saying for the passed hour,” he said, lifting himself off the couch. “No one wants to stay at this shabby-looking motel.”
Violet rolled her eyes. “You know, I'd like to think my brother would have some faith in something important to our mom and dad, but--“
“Hey Vi,” he said, pushing his fingers to her lips. “When will you realize that all the things that mom does, never works? Remember that casserole she made? Or that homemade body wash?” They both shuddered.
“Okay, I understand that, but what about all the money they put into this? They wouldn't do that if they knew they weren't gonna get business. Am I--“
“Well would you look at that,” he interrupted, staring out the front window. Violet turned her head to what he was looking at and grinned.
“Is that a customer? Oh my gosh, that better be a customer,” Violet gushed.
A young couple stepped out of their car, and walked toward the office. “Damn, she's hot. You think I have a chance?” Max muttered.
Violet cringed, “Absolutely not. She obviously came here with her boyfriend.” Damn you, Max. Always thinking he was a charmer with the ladies. In reality, he's about as smooth as Napoleon Dynamite.
“Who knows, could be her brother--“
“Hello, welcome to Bates Motel!” She spoke, as the couple neared the front desk.
“Hi,” the lady giggled, kissing the man next to her. Violet smirked and turned around, giving Max a knowing look. “Room for two. Just one night,” the lady spoke.
“Alright, you guys will be in room nine,” Violet said, grabbing the set of keys from the back wall.
“Thank you,” the man said, grabbing the keys.
“She looked twenty anyway. Too old for you,” Violet joked with Max, once the couple left.
