"Move." Stevie wasn't afraid to push all the kids out of her way to get into the ambulance with her husband... he wasn't going anywhere without her.
"Watch your step, mom." Kash was right behind her, making sure she crawled in carefully.
It was hectic. Between the yelling of paramedics back and forth to get him in safely, and then there were what seemed like a thousand people hurrying by in the usual Chicago traffic, all while everyone who was left at the party hurried outside to see what was happening as well... It was overwhelming, but at that moment, Lindsey was the only concern anyone seemed to have.
"We'll meet you at the hospital." Elise assured, a heavy sigh escaping her once Stevie had sat down in one piece.
The last thing they needed was for her to fall off a step.... there really would have been uproar then.
Stevie just nodded her head as she tried to wipe away her tears, but they were coming far too fast to even try and keep up with. "Is he okay?" She asked, blurry eyes scanning him over.
By then the double doors had closed, the sirens were on and the ambulance was swerving in and out of city traffic.
He had his eyes open, and he was even blinking like normal, which seemed like a good sign in her opinion... but she wasn't a doctor.
"We're going to go ahead and do a ECG, okay?" She was a younger woman, probably fresh out of school and far more sympathetic than any other paramedic in the ambulance.
Wrinkling her brows, Stevie's eyes fell back on her husband. "Is he gonna be okay?" She repeated, tears still steaming down her cheeks at a fast pace.
She couldn't remember the last time she had been that scared. It had just happened so fast, which sent everyone into a panic instantly. One minute he was totally fine and the next he was having a hard time breathing... It was scary.
"Ma'am, we are going to do our very best to get him stable." She assured, a gentle nod following her words. "But until then, you can try talking to him. I'm sure he would love to hear your voice." She was trying to make Stevie feel better long enough for them to do their job and get him to the hospital, that was all.
Swallowing hard, her hand met his softly. "Hi, my sweet boy." She bit down on her lower lip, trying hard to see past all the cords and wires they had connected to him... that didn't even look like Lindsey. "You're going to be okay." She assured him, even though she might have really been trying to assure herself.
Blinking heavily, his deep blue eyes closed a moment later as he started to focus more on her words, rather than the sound of the breathing machine they'd hocked him up to.
Even when he was totally out of it, he still found comfort in the sound of her voice. So she talked to him all the way to the hospital, while everyone else moved around them.
It still felt like a century before they finally pulled up to the hospital, and paramedics jumped out to help Stevie, and get Lindsey inside.
"Can I go with him?" She still had her fingers tangled in his, moving quickly to try and keep up as they rushed through the emergency room.
"Ma'am," the same young woman in the ambulance was the one that was pushing Lindsey. "It would be better if you found a seat in the waiting area." She was trying to let her down easy, but it still didn't go over well with Stevie.
She wanted to be with him- she felt like she needed to be there for him... She just needed to make sure that he was going to be alright.
Half heartedly, she let go of her husbands hand and then slowly backed away. "I love you." She whispered as they continued their journey down the long hallway that led to the operating room without her.
