"Good morning, mama." Kash stepped through the sliding glass door and out onto the back patio to greet his mother.
She was sitting on one of the sun beds, writing. She had been up for a couple of hours, she could hardly sleep at all the night before because she just had a lot on her mind. Everything was suddenly happening all at once, everyone around her knew that... even Crosby had told Lindsey to make sure she was taking it easy.
Turning in her chair, she gave her youngest a big smile. "Good morning, honey." She motioned for him to sit down in the seat next her.
"Here you go," he handed her a cup from the local coffee shop he had stopped at on his way over.
"Thank you." She took a quick sip as she watched him fall into the other sun bed.
Leaning back, he slid his sunglasses up to really look at her. She looked a little tired, maybe like she had worn herself thin... and in all reality, she had. She was at the restaurant most days of the week and then she would spend free nights with her friends, like always, but the whole baby thing really lingered heavily on her mind.
It really bothered her that Lindsey hadn't come around to accept what she was going and she didn't understand why. He was so on board with it in the beginning and then suddenly, he didn't want to talk about... He didn't want her to do it.
"Did you get your hair done?" He smiled lightly.
Kash was her saving grace, truly. If there was anything she ever needed, or anyone she really needed to talk to, Kash was her person. He was the perfect mix of both of his parents... all the boys were, but he got his mother's patience, his fathers clarity and the warmest pieces of both their hearts. He was a safe place when everything else felt like it was spiraling out of control.
But since he was the youngest, he didn't experience the life the other two had. Kash got the best of both of his parents for most of his life.
She chuckled, nodding her head softly. "I got it touched up yesterday afternoon." She had figured that if she was going to carry a baby, she needed to do all the things she wouldn't be able to before the transfer... so the night before, she got her hair done, sat in the hot tub for hours and between her and friends, they downed four bottles of wine.
It had been a couple of weeks since they had gotten back, and within the days following, Crosby and Lucy would be in town to do the transfer. It had been hectic, very stressful for all of them. Stevie had gone to her doctors appointments with Elise multiple times just to ensure that everything would go smooth for the entity of the nine months, all while Lindsey paced around the house.
They hadn't talked much more about it, simply because neither of them had changed their minds about the idea, and Lindsey was still camped out in the guest room to think about it.
"It looks really good." He assured, eyes roaming from her back towards the swimming pool.
It was a calm morning, the only sound were the birds chirping and the very faint clatter of the neighbor cutting the grass.
"I talked to dad last night." Kash wasn't too worried about his parents relationship- he knew they adored one another. But he could hear how concerned his fathers voice had sounded on the phone the night before and that was what worried him.
She sank down in her chair, a soft sigh filling the morning air around them. "We're fine, honey." She shrugged, taking another sip of the hot coffee.
He held up his hand, eyes gentle. "I know you're fine, mom. I know you're going to come out of this stronger than ever." He lingered, almost certain of that. "But he sounded like he really missed you, that was all." Kash didn't put himself in their marriage, ever, but he was able to play a middle man on the rare occasion... only when someone really needed to.
