There was an alarm clock ringing in the background. "Barry! Get up or you'll be late on your first day of school!" Henry Allen shouted. Barry groaned as he got out of bed. Barry got dressed and went downstairs. "Cheer up, son. New school new friends" Henry said. Barry didn't want to go. He'd rather stay at home and sleep, which is probably we'd all want to do.
"I just miss mom" Barry said. "I know, son. I miss her too. Not a day goes by that I don't miss her. She'd want you get on with your life. Now hurry up or you'll be late" Henry said. Barry arrived at McKinley High and headed to his locker. He kept trying to open it and failed. He got frustrated. A girl, next to him, managed to open her locker. "Why can't I open this stupid thing!" Barry angrily exclaimed. The girl couldn't help but laugh and then decided to help him.
"Here" the girl spoke. The girl opened Barry's locker for him. "Thanks" he said. "I haven't seen you before. Are you new?" she asked. "Yeah. I am. I'm Barry" he greeted. "I'm Kara Danvers. Pleasure to meet you. How are you liking McKinley High?" Kara asked. "It's okay, I guess" he replied. "Well you're very cute Barry. I'm sure you'll fit right in" she complimented. "I - I uh thanks" Barry stuttered. "Anytime. I'm off to class but uh, if you need anything else, just as. I'll always be around" Kara said. She then left for class.
Barry smiled for the first time in a while. It was lunch, and Kara was sitting at a table. Then a bottle sat down beside her. Her boyfriend Jake. "So I saw you talking to a boy. What's that about?" Jake asked with paranoia. "Nothing. He's new. I was just welcoming him. There's no need to get jealous" Kara replied. "You're right. I'm sorry. I got paranoid" Jake apologised. "It's alright. Are we still on for tomorrow?" she asked. "I can't. I have to work. I promise I'll reschedule" Jake said. Barry was in the background. Disappointed.
The end of school came and Barry saw Kara alone. "Hey Kara. How's it going?" he asked. "Hey Barry. I was meant to be hanging with my boyfriend Jake, but he's working. As usual" she replied, with sadness. "Oh, I'm sorry" he said. "Don't be. I'm used to it. Do you want to hang out for a while?" she asked. "Sure. I'd like that" he said.
But Jake was up to something. He met with a girl named Bree, who was a cheerleader at McKinley High. "Okay Bree. You ready to go?" he asked. "Yeah. So what did you tell your girlfriend?" she asked. "Working" Jake replied. "Seriously again? She's going to catch onto you. But whatever, it's not my problem. Let's go" she said.
Meanwhile at the principals office, there was a new student, Vanessa. "Alright well, everything seems to be in order, and your class schedule is here" the principal said. "Yeah. Whatever" she moaned. "Welcome to McKinley High. I'm sure you'll love it here" said the principal. "Right. I'm sure it'll be a blast" Vanessa sarcastically said.
Barry and Kara decided to go bowling. "Oh tough luck!" Barry exclaimed. "I'm awful at bowling!" Kara exclaimed, while giggling. "My turn" Barry said. Barry picked up a ball and was beginning to throw it. Then memories of his mom began running through his head. He lost focus and threw the ball into the side. "Are you bad at bowling or something?" Kara asked. Tears began forming in Barry's eyes and left. Kara went after him.
Barry was crying on a bench and Kara sat down next to him. "What's wrong?" she asked. "It's just... bowling was my favourite thing to do with my mom" he replied. Then Kara got the sense that she knew what was he gonna say next. "My mom died when I was eleven. We knew that we couldn't stay in Central City any longer so we decided to move away to Midvale. A fresh start. You don't have to stay. You can leave if you want" Barry said. Kara knew what he was going through. She lost her parents and her planet.
"I'm not going anywhere, Barry. I understand what you're going through. Dwelling in the past makes it worse. It may sound awful but, you need to move on" Kara said. Barry stopped crying and have a little smile. "Is that a smile I see?" Kara teasingly asked. "Come on. I haven't finished humiliating you at bowling" she said. "You? Humiliate me? Don't you start crying when I beat you" Barry said.
Barry and Kara continued their game of bowling.
The next day, Barry and Kara met outside the schools front door. "Hey. I had fun yesterday. Thanks for inviting me" he said. "Yeah me too. I didn't know you were good at bowling" she complimented. "I better go find Jake. See you around, Barry" she said. "See ya, Kara" he said.
Then a lost Vanessa walked up to Barry. "Excuse me. I'm a little lost. Do you think you can help me?" she asked. "Me?" he asked. "Yeah. You see, it's my first day and I don't know where my first class is" Vanessa replied. "Well, I don't know how much help I can be. But I can try" Barry said. "You're new too?" she asked. "Yeah. I've only been here a few weeks. Except I didn't have anyone to show me around" Barry replied. "Well I appreciate you showing me around. Us new kids got to stick together. I'm Vanessa, by the way" she greeted. "I guess we do. I'm Barry" he greeted.
Kara saw Barry and Vanessa talking to each other. She wasn't sure why, but she had a strange feeling. An unknown feeling. Then Jake arrived.
"There you are. Are you ready to head to class?" he asked. "Yeah, I guess" she replied. But she wasn't really listening. "Good. Because if I'm late to English again then Ms Lincoln is gonna be mad and I don't want that" Jake said. Kara and Jake left for English.
What was the strange feeling Kara had?
