I stood in the mirror, looking at my reflection. In just under 2 hours, my life is going to change. I'm going to become a wolf and everything is going to be different. I took a deep breath and peered over at Carson who was glancing between the outfits our mum had placed out on our beds. I scoffed and went over to him.
"Your suit is nice, Caleb." He muttered through the link. I rolled my eyes and looked down. A new navy 3 piece suit had been laid out on my bed paired with some black dress shoes. I'm going to my shifting ceremony, not my Alpha ceremony. Why the need to prance me about in fancy clothes which will get shredded to pieces is beyond me. I glanced at Carson's outfit... My mum had been in his wardrobe and pulled out the first thing she saw.
I rolled my eyes and picked my suit up, tossing it across the room. I looked at Carson who raised his brow at me. I smirked before going over to my wardrobe and picking out some sweatpants and a hoodie. I held them up in front of Carson who smiled at me. He went to his wardrobe and pulled his sweatpants and hoodie out.
"I hate how they treat you, Car," I muttered. He nodded and smiled sadly at me. "As long as they treat you well." He replied. I shook my head and sighed. "You're my brother, my twin. They hurt you, it hurts me." I whimpered. "Let's get this over with and we can plan our escape." I took a deep breath as he went into the bathroom.
I sat on the edge of my bed and pulled on my hoodie before putting on my sweatpants. I flopped back down on my bed, staring at the ceiling. It wasn't always like this, our parents doted on us both. Our mum didn't have a good upbringing with her parents, she never tells exactly what happened but I do know our grandparents weren't the nicest. She always said she wanted us to have the childhood she didn't have, and we did for a while.
We can't stay here. Carson can't stay here. I sighed and sat up as Carson came out of the bathroom. "You ready?" He asked quickly, his voice laced with slight panic. I nodded and went over to him. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you. It's you and me against the world, right?" I smiled at him as I held my fist out. He bumped my fist and nodded.
We left the bedroom and came face to face with our parents. My dad just rolled his eyes, clicked his tongue and stormed down the stairs. "What the Goddess are you wearing, Caleb?" She shrilled. I glanced down at my outfit and shrugged. "That suit was specially made for you." She sighed. "Did you get one made for Carson?" I asked, raising my brow. When she didn't answer, I scoffed and chuckled humourlessly. "Didn't think so." I snapped, "Come on, we don't want everyone to think we aren't the loving family you make us out to be, do you?" I snarled.
I dragged Carson down the stairs with me as mum rolled her eyes at me. I don't understand why I can say whatever I want to our mum and she doesn't bite back, it's like she's afraid of something. I wish I could work out what. Dad, on the other hand, he's not as bad as mum when it comes to Carson but he has no love or time for him and he shows with his actions. I don't get away with talking back at him.
"I'm scared." Carson worried through the link. "There's nothing to be scared of. No one is going to say anything to you, you'll be fine. I promise." I reassured through our link. I heard him take a deep breath but he didn't reply to that.
As we reached the centre of the pack lands, the nervousness was kicking in. Everyone was here, all waiting to see their future Alpha and Beta shift for the first time. I could feel the tension rolling off Carson, I placed my hand on his shoulder and squeezed. "You and me, remember?" I whispered, trying to ease his mind. I felt him relax a little so I removed my hand as we stopped in front of a little makeshift stage.
My dad was stood in the centre of the stage with his Beta stood next to him. Mum went up the small steps and took her place beside dad. A true Alpha and Luna.
"Thank you all for attending this shifting ceremony for my sons." My dad bellowed. I cringed at him and looked at Carson. His whole body was shaking and I just wanted to grab him and get him somewhere he felt safe. "Please, Caleb and Carson come and take centre stage." My dad smiled at us both but I could see the forced smile at Carson. I held my tongue, there was a time and place to disobey your father... But disobeying your Alpha in public is sealing your fate.
"Deep breath, Carson. It'll be over before you know it." I tried reassuring him the best I could. He glanced at me and gave me a weak smile that didn't do much for easing my anxiety. I made my way onto the stage, making sure Carson was following close to me. "You are all here to witness your future Alpha and Beta as they shift for the first time and gain their wolves. Without further ado, Caleb and Carson Stone." He announced, proudly.
We stood side by side with our parents behind us. Carson's eyes went wide and he started looking around. I tried mindlinking him but I couldn't get through. I grabbed his shoulders and made him look at me. "What's up?" I rushed out. He shook his head then recoiled over in pain. He was starting the shift. I stood and watched as his body convulsed causing him to fall to the floor. He writhed around in pain, screaming out. If it wasn't because of his pain, I would have been shocked that I could hear his voice even if it was screaming.
I watched in surprise as his arms and legs started breaking and twisting in ways you would never believe unless you saw it. Tears were falling from his eyes. I glanced at our parents and they were watching him closely, eyes going wide now and again.
It makes sense him shifting first, he was born first so I'll be shifting after him but watching him, I don't think I wanna shift. I cringed as his back arched and twisted making him roll onto his front. Fur began spouting from his skin, slowly and painfully. Suddenly everything stopped, he was still. No sound was coming out of him, there was more fur than skin on his body.
"Mum? Dad?" I whispered, glancing at them. Tears flowing down my cheeks. I stepped forward to move towards Carson and dad held his hand up, stopping me. I scowled at him and he shot me a look that made me freeze in place.
A loud snap echoed throughout the pack lands. If I had blinked, I would have missed it, Carson rose on 4 legs. Stood in front of me was a stunning midnight blue wolf. I gazed at him in awe. He was massive, he stared back at me before turning his gaze to our parents. Their eyes were wide, dad looked shocked and a little impressed whereas mum had a panicked look in her eyes which confused me. He bared his teeth at them and growled.
"Carson," Dad spoke clearly, it was a warning. Carson's wolf instantly backed down. He sat on his hind legs and looked back at me. I waited for the pain to take me...
But it never happened.
