"do you call her? almost say my name"
-----
It was a nice day outside. Pollen was making Avalon's nose stuffy but the sun was out and the breeze was light.
Avalon waited for Sirius in the yard. She sat on a stone bench with a book in her lap. Pride and Prejudice. Avalon's head perked up at the sound of Sirius' voice and she could see him walking with two girls.
One of the girls, a redheaded Gryffindor didn't seem to like his presence as much and she wore a false smile. Lily Evans. Avalon didn't know her well, but she knew enough. She knew the girl's name and she knew that James Potter fancied her.
The other girl, on the other side of Sirius, was a blonde with blue eyes. She sort of looked like Avalon, but she had a more graceful and elegant look to her. The girl had small flowers littering her hair and she wore floral pants.
Avalon didn't like her, but to be fair, she's never even met the girl.
Sirius looked in Avalon's direction and Avalon quickly looked back down at the open book. Her eyes only focused on one sentence as she tried to listen in on Sirius' conversation.
Sirius parted from the group and jogged over to Avalon with a grin on his face. He cleared his throat to get Avalon's attention and she smiled up at him. The Black boy sat down beside her and Avalon lifted her book, allowing him to lay down properly and rest his head on her lap.
"Who was that?"
"Evans," he answered, staring up at her. "James wanted me to talk him up to her, but I don't really think it's working. If anything she seems more pissed." Avalon airily laughed as she moved her arm to the side to read from that angle.
"And the other girl?" Avalon asked, hoping that the jealousy in her voice wasn't showing. The other girl was much prettier and she seemed so much better than Avalon. Would anyone even blame Avalon for being jealous? If she was?
"Oh. That's just Caroline," Sirius shrugged casually. "Caroline Pettigrew. Peter's sister."
"Mhm," she replied, pretending to focus on her reading. "How long have you known her?"
"Since first year," he said. "She's really nice. We met on the train, before I met you. Caroline and Peter came into my compartment and then the rest of the Marauders came along, so there wasn't enough space. I left, and then I found you, so that's the end of the story."
"Are you two close?"
"Not really. I mean- hmm. Why are you asking so many questions?" Sirius asked. "Caroline's a nice girl and she's very interesting but I don't see why that matters to you."
"It doesn't," Avalon sighed. "It's just, I've never seen her or even heard of her before. So, you know her and-"
"I know lots of people," he said. "Don't worry. She's no threat to our friendship."
"Oh, okay," she nodded weakly. Maybe Caroline Pettigrew was a threat to their friendship, maybe she wasn't. But Avalon didn't really have their friendship in mind when she was thinking about their relationship. "That's good to know."
"So, what're you doing today?"
"Well, I've got Quidditch practice from 4:30 to 6:00, and then I've got an hour to spare before dinner," Avalon replied.
"That sucks," Sirius hummed, his eyebrows knitting together. "We've booked the pitch from 6:05 to 6:50. And then I've got to use those ten minutes to clean myself up for dinner. I s'pose we don't have to hang out today."
