"cus you played her uptown girl"
-----
James dropped his satchel onto the ground, beside his bed, and he dragged himself over to Sirius. Sirius was sitting on his own bed, skimming through a magazine with disinterest. James flopped himself onto Sirius' bed and laid beside him.
Sirius slowly lowered his magazine onto his lap. "Do you need somethin-"
"How could you do this to me?!" James shouted dramatically. "How could you ever cheat on me?! How?!"
"We are not together-"
"But we're best friends! Bestest bestest friends out of the bestest bestest friends of the entire world!" the bespectacled boy whined. "And now you're off fancying and snogging girls and you've left me all alone!"
"You've got other friends," Sirius pointed out. "Like Peter and Moony."
"It's not the same!" James insisted. "Those are just my best friends! Why do you keep cheating on me?! Why?! WHYYYY?"
"I'm not cheating on you with anyone because-"
"We're not together. I know, I know. But I feel as if we are because we are so connected!" James exclaimed. "How dare you go off and snog girls! You disgust me! Gah, I can't even look at you!" James rolled off of Sirius' bed and landed on the floor with a thud.
Sirius watched as James quickly stood up and recomposed himself. James pointed his finger at Sirius. "You, mister, are filled with girl cooties!" he shouted. "You're so girl-infested and girl-germ-ridden!"
"I don't understand why this is such a big deal," Sirius huffed. "I'm growing up and I am going to fancy girls, and so are you. I don't even know why you're yelling at me when you clearly fancy a girl just like me."
"Yes, but the difference is that I'm not doing anything with Evans! I'm practicing abstinence!" James said in a matter-of-fact voice.
"More like rejection," the dark-haired boy snorted.
"How dare you?!"
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry," Sirius sighed, putting his hands up in defeat. "What do you suppose I do about my... girl cooties?"
"Practice abstinence," James shrugged confidently. He pointed to himself and puffed out his chest. "Just like me!"
"You want me to stop snogging girls?" Sirius asked slowly.
"No, stop contact with girls," the bespectacled boy proposed. "Not forever. Just until we're not awkward teenage boys with breakouts and awkward stuttering. I'd say until fifth year."
"No way in hell am I doing that," Sirius snorted.
"Yes, you will," James nodded. "I mean, by then, we'll be way past the awkward stage. And besides, we have all of our Hogwarts years to do things with girls. And boys, but girls are more dangerous. We can get them knocked up and then Merlin knows how our lives will turn out!" He threw his hands into the air for exaggeration and he flopped onto his own bed.
"You're getting ahead of yourself," Sirius stated calmly. "We're only so deep into snogging, but no one's even talking about shagging yet."
"Just snogging?" James asked suspiciously. "Just snogging?"
"Kissing," his best friend corrected. "Kissing is when lips touch something, right-"
"Eugh!" James shuddered, covering his ears.

"Oh, this is the song we heard at Madam Puddifoots, right?" Sirius asked. He casually stared at the ceiling, laying on his bed beside Avalon. "That Elvis Parsley guy?"
"Elvis Presley," Avalon laughed. "But yes, it is the song."
"This should be our song," he suggested. "It's official. It's our song."
"What?" she asked out of confusion. Avalon always wanted to share a song with someone but she just didn't know how to bring the question up to anyone because it's just a weird question.
"Whenever we hear this song and we're not together, we have to mail each other a letter or something," Sirius stated. "But for now, since we are together, let's dance." He popped up out of the bed and held out his hand to Avalon.
Avalon tried her best not to smile as she grabbed the hand of the foolishly young boy. Sirius put his other hand on her waist and Avalon put a hand on his shoulder.
"I feel old," Avalon moaned as they swayed to the slow music. "Like we're some old, sweet couple that give kids caramels on Halloween."
"Weird comparison, but strangely accurate," Sirius nodded wisely.
"I know," she nodded. The two danced in silence until the last few lines.
"For I can't help falling in love with you," Sirius sang softly. Maybe he did know what he was doing or maybe he didn't, but at that moment, Sirius leaned towards Avalon.
Avalon subconsciously leaned in too and their lips brushed for a split second before Avalon sprung out of his grip and backed away quickly. She nervously laughed, causing Sirius' eyes to widen.
"WHAT JUST HAPPENED?" he shouted.
"I DON'T KNOW!" Avalon screeched, pointing a finger at him accusingly. "THAT WAS YOU!"
"NU-UH!"
"YA-HUH!"
"THAT WAS ALL YOU!"
"WAS NOT!"
"IT WAS!"
Avalon covered her face with her hands and sat down at the edge of Sirius' bed. Instead of walking out, Sirius went to sit beside her. He looked at the wall in front of them.
"I've never kissed anyone before," she finally confessed after a few moments of silence. Avalon could feel Sirius' gaze on her but she still didn't lift her head.
"But I thought Parkinson-"
"I lied," Avalon sighed. "Parkinson walked me to my dorm and then he tried to kiss me but I shut the door on his face and then I told you that he kissed me because I didn't want you to think I was lame or a prude or something."
"I wouldn't think that," Sirius opposed softly. "And even if I did, I wouldn't tell you that." Avalon weakly laughed and removed her hands from her face, calming down. She leaned her head on Sirius' shoulder.
"There was just never a right moment or a right person, so it never happened," she confessed. "I think I wanted my first kiss to be special, so I just kept holding out, and now, everyone's gotten their first kiss out of the way and I'm the odd one out."
"First kisses are not really important," Sirius shrugged. "You have this image in your head but then you do it, and it's nothing like you've imagined. Like, lips feel like slugs. I'm not even going to lie to you, it's nothing great."
"Slugs?" Avalon laughed, looking up at him.
"Yeah, slugs," he nodded, grinning. "They feel like slugs. And it's wet and there's no feeling, no matter how much you fancy that person. The first kiss is just a practice run for your second kiss."
"Is that how you viewed it?"
"I think that's how you should view it," Sirius said. "I view all the girls I've snogged as practice for when I really do fancy someone and I want them to have the best version of me."
"Ooh," Avalon teased. "Do you have someone in mind?"
"Maybe," the dark-haired boy blushed. "But that's none of your concern."
"Fine, don't tell me," Avalon said, lifting her head off his shoulder.
"I'll tell you if you let me kiss you," Sirius said. Avalon raised her eyebrows. "We're best friends," he stated. "I'd rather be your first kiss than let any other guy have that to brag about. And, I know what I'm doing so I can show you the ropes for your next guy."
