there is a reason that meredith stopped wearing her hair in the french sidebraid and stopped dressing herself in frilly dressed and itchy sweaters. it was because she decided that she stopped caring. there was nothing she could do to please everyone, so she only decided to please herself.

the sweatshirts and leggings and jeans that she loved were her new choices. her mother was very proud of her for finally deciding to quit caring about what her peers thought.

her dad was not.

meredith's father believed that meredith was about to crash and burn in all ways imaginable, get pregnant, and drop out. the worst part of this is that he believed that ashton fletcher irwin was the cause. he did not understand that without him the night luke had made her feel terrible, ashton was the one to comfort. also with calum, and her dad himself on some occasions. but all her dad took ashton for was a delinquient.

so after dinner this night, meredith decided to talk to her dad. she took a deep breath and walked into the living room. "can ashton come back for dinner on friday?" meredith asked sweetly, sitting down on the couch next to her dad.

"no." he answered sternly, his forehead beginning to wrinkle.

meredith cocked an eyebrow. "might i ask why?"

her father gritted his teeth and muted the football game on the television. "i don't want you seeing that irwin kid anymore."

she could almost feel her whole world crash down in a matter of seconds. "w-why?" she slacked her jaw and started becoming angry. he couldn't do this to her, ashton was her only friend!

"he's a bad kid." her dad sighed, resting his head in his hands.

tears clouded her vision and everything looked blurry but her mind felt sharper than ever as if she could feel everything. "no, dad you do not hate doing this because if you did you wouldn't be doing it." meredith's voice cracked and shook with every word that flew out of her mouth. "so what if he dresses in dark clothes or smokes sometimes, he's my only friend."

suddenly, he slammed his hands on the table and stood. "i dont want you around him because i know what goes through his mind." her dad shook his finger in her face and articulated every syllable.

a rush of anger and adrenaline flew through her body as she bolted up from the couch and ran to the door, disregarding proper shoes and a jacket alike.

just as she made it down the walkway, her dad ran onto the porch and yelled, "don't you dare go to that boy's house!"

"watch me!" meredith retaliated, the cold cement making her feet nearly freeze as she was only wearing some socks. it was dark already but by now she knew the route to ashton's house and could get there with her eyes closed.

she blinked back tears and knocked on his door only to be greeted by a lady with hair so blonde it was almost white. "who are you?" she snapped at meredith, eyeing her up and down suspiciously.

"uh, um, i'm meredith, ashton's friend, you must be his mother?" she stuttered, remembering the things he said about his mom.

"yes, i am his mother, and what business do you have here looking like some homeless wreck?" the woman spat, venom dripping from her voice as she looked down at meredith disapprovingly.

she shook only slightly from the cold then said, "i had to leave in a hurry but if i could please just talk to ashton?"

his mother glared and seemed like she was going to say something very rude before a familiar voice interjected, "meredith?"

"hey, asht-" she was quickly cut off.

"meredith, get in here before you freeze." he opened the door a little more and yanked her in by the arm. "mom, we're going upstairs."

before his mother could say anything, they quickly acsended up the stairs and locked themselves in his room just before meredith burst into tears.

ashton instinctively wrapped his arms around the sobbing girl as an attempt to calm her. "what happened?" he asked, rubbing small circles on meredith's back in an attempt to soothe her. her body shook enough to scare ashton while coughs and sputters emitted from her throat.

"my dad.." she mumbled, grabbing fistfuls of his shirt in her hands and pulling them to her eyes in an attempt to hide her face. "it's dumb, but... but..." and that was enough to send her back to tears. "all i do is cry god dammit."

ashton chuckled. "what'd he do?"

"i'm not allowed to see you anymore." she sniffled, "he doesn't joke around like this."

he sighed heavily. "its 9 days to christmas, why is he such a dick?"

meredith laughed a little. "he's just a grinch."
