nothing could compare to the adrenaline she felt walking out of the house as if she'd just set off a bomb. the only thing she heard as she stepped through that front door was, "lucas robert hemmings you are so grounded!"

there was nothing else for her to do in the rich part of town at 7:15 at night, so meredith just walked around. the cool air surrounded her peacefully, and she tugged her coat around her body even tighter.

the sun met the horizon like a beautiful blackberry kiss until it disappeared into the night. her feet led her where they wanted to go until they stopped abruptly in front of his house. meredith glanced at her watch. she'd been walking for about an hour now, and now didn't seem like a good time to stop. besides, ashton would probably be at michael's or something. she continued walking on, staring at the flickering streetlights and the dust that filtered through it.

meredith passed the cemetery, and the trees lying around it like a barrier. across the street was her school, looking gloomy in the dim light. she kept walking.

the lights were off in the dairy queen she goes to with her mom sometimes. the only things lit in the shopping center in front of her is the 24 hour rite-aid. she really wanted to pick up some chocolate, but meredith took another left and kept walking.

passing memory after memory she blindly walked right back into the trap. there she stood in the middle of the street, half past eleven on christmas eve night. one light was on in the upstairs window. meredith told herself not to knock, but her feet were leading her again and her knuckles hit the hard wood a total of three times. her eyes clenched shut and she really hoped that he would not answer the door, or that he was actually sleeping.

meredith heard footsteps from inside the house and debated running away on the spot. the door opened. ashton faced her for the first time in days.

"hello." he coughed.

meredith twisted the ball of her foot on the pavement step that she stood on awkwardly. "hi." she said, looking up at him. "merry christmas."

"would you like to come inside?" he asked, moving out of the door frame a little bit.

meredith walked inside and he shut the door behind her. "look, i'm really sorry." she sighed.

"it's alright." ashton muttered, running a hand through his hair.

"but-" meredith tried to say when ashton cut her off for the third time that they've known each other. his hands were on either side of her face and their lips mashed together and this time she knew it wasn't an accident. meredith pulled away after a few seconds.

"was that an accident?"

"no."

"impulse?"

"no."

"so this time you really wanted to kiss me?" she smiled.

"yep." he answered, smiling back. "do you still think i'm the baby daddy?"

meredith laughed heartily. "boy do i have a story to tell."
