all meredith wanted to do that day is mope around in her room, and think about her first kiss wasted. but alas, this was not a perfect world. around 3:30, her mother told her to get dressed because the hemmings were coming over for dinner.

she'd met the hemmings' son in 8th grade in her algebra class. they always fought for the top grade in the class, and soon realized their fathers worked for the same company. thats when these stupid little dinners started. luke and meredith despised each other, and she was pretty sure their mothers did too. they would always politely tell each other about their child's accomplishments, always trying to one up each other.

meredith lifted herself from her bed and walked to her closet. she knew that she had to dress nicely for these stupid dinners. she stripped herself of the clothes she was wearing from the night before, and got into a navy blue t-shirt dress with tights and all. her hair was in the same braid, so she took it out and redid it.

there was no motivation for her to do any of these things, but she walked into the bathroom, put in her contacts and took a long hard stare at herself in the mirror.

she could only think of ashton's view of her perfection. by now he'd probably realized she's not, and he'd drift away. meredith sighed heavily, and washed her face. she did natural looking makeup and put a smile on her face.

her mother was in the kitchen cooking dinner when she walked down. "what's for dinner?" meredith asked.

"fettuccini alfredo with a bunch of veggies." her mom smiled, and put some asparagus in a pan. "they'll be coming soon, try to be nice to luke."

she groaned loudly. "i dont like him, mom." meredith picked at her fingernails, leaning on their counter.

"pretend you do." her mother said. "i dont really like him either."

they both laughed a little, and the doorbell rang. "i'll get it." meredith said to her mom, and jogged towards the living room and answered the door. mrs. hemmings came in first, shaking meredith's hand, then her husband, and then lucas, who glared and shook her hand.

"what'd you get on the chemistry test?" he asked smugly.

"ninety-nine." she smirked as he scowled and walked away.

the table was set for five, and when meredith walked into their dining area her mother was bringing out dishes already. she reluctantly took her seat next to luke, and poured herself a glass of water from the fancy crystal pitcher that her parents only pull out for fancy dinners.

"mary this looks wonderful." mrs. hemmings complimented.

her mother beamed. "thank you, meredith helped."

meredith didn't really help, but this is where everything started. her mother said something about meredith, then lukes mother something about him, and it would go on until they left.

"oh that's lovely of you meredith." luke's mother smiled. "did we tell you that luke started tutoring?"

luke stabbed his asparagus, obviously annoyed. the only thing him and meredith could see eye to eye on is how annoying their parents were.

"that's wonderful!" merediths mother gusher. "dont you tutor honey?"

"they didn't need me anymore after a while." she said, taking a bite of her pasta.

"i guess you're very efficient." mr. hemmings told her. meredith cracked a little smile. "mary, where's phillip?"

"oh he's in boston on a business trip." her mother smiled.

"luke what'd you get on the chemistry test?" meredith asked. she wanted to rub in his failure of trying to make sure he was better than her even further.

"ninety-two." he muttered.

"oh, i got a ninety-nine." she smirked, taking a sip of her water.

her mother smiled widely, but her smile was quickly wiped off her face when luke said, "at least i'm not friends with a burnout."

meredith's face fell but she quickly cleared her throat. "what are you talking about?"

"dont think everyone doesn't know about your new best friend ashton irwin." luke smirked.

"oh what a shame, i heard his family's having some issues." lukes father said and meredith gripped her fork tightly.

his mother sipped her water before saying, "yes, i heard that-"

"could you excuse me and luke for a moment?" meredith said as sweetly as possible, before grabbing luke by his sleeve and dragging him to the hall.

he had a smug expression on his face as meredith crossed her arms. "what the hell was that?" she whispered harshly.

"why do you even talk to him?"

"maybe because he's nice to me." she said.

"he's not like us." luke scoffed.

"you mean he's not like you." she glared. "you're right, he's not a spoiled rich brat."

luke squinted his eyes at her. "don't act like you aren't one, too."

she felt like yelling at the top of her lungs. "no, i can live without the luxury of a hot tub and crystal chandeliers." she sneered, staying quiet.

"well is that why you moved to a smaller neighborhood?" he smirked. "or are your parents losing money?"

meredith's face went pale. "we'd rather have a smaller more decorated house than an empty large one." she squeaked. this was a lie, her mothers campaign was taking a toll on their money. their last hope to get more money was for her to win.

"sure." luke said, and turned to walk back into the dining room.

dinner was finished in silence for the first time, and as meredith walked their guests to the door, her and luke didn't even look at each other. afterwards she ran upstairs and stared at a wall. ashton wasn't texting her, her mom was cleaning, her dad was away, and any other person who claimed to be her friend only liked her when there were homework answers involved.

so she decided to take matters into her own hands.

her mother surely wouldn't let her out of the house after what'd happened, so she scribbled a quick note about how she'd be back later, left it on her bed and thought of an escape.

the back door was on the complete opposite side of the kitchen, so she quickly got dressed in her sweatshirt and black leggings and made her silent descent down the stairs.

meredith slipped out the backdoor and into the night without anyone noticing. she walked around the neighborhood until stopping in front of his house.
