A/N: This chapter is technically chapter one but it is short because it is more like an intro to the reader's character. She will meet Loki in chapter two, this is more so a background chapter :)

You had always had a knack for getting into trouble. Whether it be skipping school, damaging property, or getting caught stealing. You were born in a small town in Massachusetts and had always felt suffocated by the people who lived there. You had a somewhat normal childhood until age ten when your dad packed up and left you, your mom and your baby brother to suddenly pursue a new life. You had felt crushed but as the years went on you numbed, or at least that's what you let everyone think. That's when the trouble began, you can remember clearly the first time you felt drawn to it.

You had been fourteen at the time and had gone to an abandoned house with your friend one hot August day to sit around and talk. The two of you had gotten into a conversation about your dad and you felt anger swell in your chest. You and her had started throwing rocks at the already cracked windows to blow off steam. You had picked up a rock to throw but before it had even left your hand, the window had shattered. You had no way of knowing what had happened but you had felt powerful. Over the next few years you had only grown stronger and more independent and so had your mysterious powers.

You never told anyone about your powers and had often stayed up at night feeling like a freak and wondering what you were. Although you got into trouble more often than normal, you had a kind heart, excluding your sassy attitude and closed off demeanor. As soon as senior year rolled around you had applied to many colleges in hopes of getting out of your small town.

Not to much of your surprise, you had been rejected from every one of them, and you cursed as you read each rejection letter feeling each as if it were a slap in your face. You really had no one to blame but yourself, you had spent most of high school cutting class and slacking off. It's not that you weren't intelligent, you were actually very smart, but had been caught up in the moment and forgot to think about life past high school as many students sadly do.

After spending the better half of the night feeling like your world was suddenly closing in on you more than it already had been all your life, you were woken up by your mom clanking around in the kitchen. You hopped out of bed and headed downstairs, not bothering to change out of your pajamas. You entered the kitchen to see your mom emptying the dishwasher and your brother sitting at the kitchen table smiling. You sat down next to him and stared for a second while he continued smiling.

"What has you in such a good mood, it's eight a.m", you asked him with annoyance in your voice.

"Mom just told me the best news ever, tell her mom", he responded.

You looked dumbly at your mom, waiting for her to tell you the apparent "best news ever".

"I've been eyeing this for a while" your mom started, "I'm sure you've heard of this, but Tony Stark is funding a new science program for kids and since your brother is such a big science whiz I thought we could go check it out"

"Isn't that all the way in New York?", you asked, knowing how expensive a cross country trip like that would be.

"Yes but your uncle lives in New York and I know he's been dying to see us", your mom looked at you with a loving smile, "and I know that you would like to get out of this town for a while" she added quietly so only you could hear.

Your mom always looked out for you, even when you were being sassy or rude she always had your best interest in mind. You loved her for that and suddenly felt a pang of guilt for all the sleepless nights you knew she had spent worrying for you.
