A small girl ran with a piece of bread in her hands the girl jumped on the man selling goldfish and used him as a booster she grabbed a pebble and threw it at the man who was chasing her

The pebble made contact with the mans forehead making him stop and rub his forehead to ease the pain

"Someone needs to teach that brat a lesson!" The man mumbled before walking away back to his shop

"And that girl over there, the one who stepped on you, is the kids friend. Her parents abandoned her so she's been on her own ever since. She's the reason the kid hasn't died from starvation if I do say so myself"

"Kawaki! Wait up!"

Kawaki stuffed the piece of paper into his back pocket

"Here"

I split the bread in half and hand it over to Kawaki. Kawaki grabbed it and started eating. To him, it felt wrong to eat something that was stolen but..he's hungry. He's desperate to eat something

I narrowed my eyes "As I thought...He didn't feed you yesterday. Right?"

Kawaki gulped the last piece before nodding "You should really stop stealing" I shook my head "Sometimes you have to be the bad guy to survive this cruel world"

We arrived at his house. I hated this house and the man in it more than anything. But there was nothing I could do besides feed Kawaki when his father wasn't around

It was the same thing over and over again

"JUST WAIT UNTIL I CATCH YOU, YOU DAMN BRAT!" I kept running a bottle of water in my hands "OI WHERE DID YOU GO!?" I hid behind a tree covering my mouth to prevent my breathing to be heard

The man grumbled before walking away I sighed and stood up, walking where Kawaki was working

"Here" Kawaki shook his head declining the bottle "It's yours" I smiled "You know I'd do anything for you so drink up"

Kawaki's face showed nothing but pure shock. He took the bottle and began to drink some went down his chin and onto the floor

We both went to the liquor store only to get a bottle that barley has enough for Kawaki's dad I glared at the man

He knew what happens to Kawaki, so why the hell was he making things more complicated!?

"Listen you son of a-"

"If you have any complains I don't wanna hear it. I am the only one with a liquor store around here"

I grit my teeth together. Was he really threatening me? I look back at Kawaki who was staring at the bottle. I relax myself. It's better than nothing after all

We kept walking and stopped in front of a white tent. A man in white approached us "Hello are you from this village? There's a plague going around so we need to draw some of your blood"

All it took was the word 'Blood' for me to stand in front of Kawaki protectively "Kawaki run home"

Kawaki stepped back before running he knew you would be okay, or at least that's what he thought

He bumped into 2 boys who immediately started picking on him mocking his dad

I heard Kawaki's voice from a distance I ran and stood in front of him. Anger was all I felt when I saw blood run down Kawaki's face "Don't you EVER try to lay your dirty hands on him!" I returned a punch to the face

I look at the other boy who stood there watching "Did you touch him!?" I yelled the boy violently shook his head

I was knocked into the ground by the boy I punched I held his fists to prevent him from hurting me

Kawaki just stood there not knowing what to do you were always protecting him using yourself as a shield without hesitation so why the hell couldn't he do the same!?

His thoughts were interrupted when the man who offered to sell him goldfish stepped in grabbing the boy and getting him off of you

"You should know better than to hit a girl. Get the hell out of here!" The boys ran I quickly stood in front of Kawaki again the man took out a napkin he offered it to Kawaki but I knocked it out of his hands

"Keep your distance"

The man sighed and took out another napkin offering it to me I took it and handed it to Kawaki

The man tried to chat with us saying nothing good will come out of endearing the pain I interrupted him by pointing to the bottle "Kawaki..the bottle...it's leaking"

Kawaki's eyes widened he grabbed the bottle and ran I followed after him "Wait!" The man yelled but we kept on running Kawaki tripped dropping the bottle I tried catching it but it slipped from my grasp

"Why is this happening..." he picked up the pieces and went home running I ran after him trying to stop him we arrived to the front door I grabbed his shoulders making him face me

There was nothing but worry in my face "Kawaki you don't have to go in there! You know what'll happen! He'll-" I stopped mid sentence when the door opened

His father stood there glaring at me I glared back "THERE SHE IS" before I could react 2 men held me by my arms "Let go! Don't you know!?"

I fought back trying to get out of their grasp

"He's gonna hurt him! Can't you see he's not safe there!" They ignored all my statements

They knew better than to mess with Kawaki's dad

What a bunch of cowards...

I was thrown into a cell "Get me out of here I need to protect him!"

Few hours later

My back was against the wall my arm rested on my knee covering from my nose to my chin while my other knee layed flat

Someone was in front of my cell we glared at each other
