"You're upset, aren't you?" I asked, though it felt like a stupid question. It was obvious he was.

"I cannot tolerate anyone calling any member of my family names like that. That stupid girl and her whole family will know who I really am."

With that, he abruptly went to his room. Uh oh. This was really bad. I ran to mine, pacing back and forth. What if he did something really bad?

'Like what?'

I didn't know, Em. I seriously didn't know-but I had never seen him like that. He was... scary.

'Just go to bed. It's been a long day; you need to rest.'

"Why don't you ever worry? You're always so calm."

'Well, it's because there's nothing to worry about at the moment. But trust me, I do get worried... a whole lot more than you do, actually.'

"Like when?"

'Like when your life is in danger.'

I froze.

"What did you say?... Em? Emma, I know you can hear me, so you better answer me right now."

'Okay, fine. I'll tell you. Guardian angels are supposed to be at a distance, but you... you can hear me now, and we can talk. It started when you were very young. Before that, I was always watching from afar.'

"Yes... the first time I heard you was after that nightmare... about a man trying to choke me. But that was a dream... when was my life in danger?"

'That very night... it wasn't a dream. He came to kill you. One of your parents' rivals. Your parents' success made many jealous; they all wanted a way to harm them-or you. Everyone has a guardian angel, but you... you're mine. When you go to bed, I stay up to protect you.'

"So how did you fight him? In the dream... I-wait, I fought him?"

'Technically, it was me. But in other people's eyes-and his-it looked like you. That's why your self-defense classes made me so happy. Made my work easier.'

"This is... confusing. Is Emma even your real name?"

'Yes. You got the name from me.'

"Oh my God... you're really Spanish."

'I actually have no race, Ky.'

"Okay... you said we were supposed to be at a distance... I'm guessing we're not anymore?"

'It's like a glass wall. I was watching you from afar. But that night... I had to break the glass to protect you. Not literally glass, of course... just an example.'

"Okay... I get it. But there's still one thing. Where do you sometimes go? I'm not buying the 'I don't go anywhere; I'm just quiet' story."

'You're too smart. I only leave when I see no danger... and when you need privacy. For example... when you're having sex.'

"I've never had sex, and you know that."

'Yes, but there will come a time. That'll be one of the times I'm not around.'

"Where do you go?"

'To see other guardian angels. I have friends, homes... cities... everything you have here.'

"Wow... Em, you have a family? That's so cool. It's a shame I can never meet or hear them like I do you."

'You want to see them? My world?'

"Obviously. But most importantly... I want to see you. Your smile, your hair, your face... everything."

'One day, I'll take you there, Ky. You'll see my world.'
