I glanced at my watch one more time, the seconds ticking louder than they should have. My patience finally snapped, and with a frustrated sigh, I dropped myself back onto the couch, the cushions sinking under my weight like they shared my disappointment.
“He’s still not there yet?” Ari asked through my phone.
“Yup.” I leaned my head back, staring at the ceiling like it might offer answers. “You know I’m even thinking of leaving him behind. He has clearly bailed on me right now.” I sighed again, frustration clawing at my chest. “Aghhhh!”
“Let me try texting him again,” she said gently, like she was trying not to fan my irritation.
Before I could respond, my door burst open, the sudden noise making me jump.
“Is that him?” Ari asked immediately.
“Clyde!!” I shot up from the couch. “I thought we agreed on not being late. Where the hell were you?”
He stood there for a second, chest rising and falling rapidly as he tried to catch his breath, eyes wide like a guilty child caught sneaking in past curfew.
“I am so sorry Ky. I lost track of time.”
Before I could say anything else, he rushed past me and paced straight into his room.
“Ari. He’s here we’ll be home soon.”
I could hear her smile through the phone.
“Okay. See you soon.”
I hung up and followed him down the hallway, irritation buzzing under my skin. I pushed his door open, fully prepared to rush him — and then I froze.
He had already taken his shirt off.
My eyes immediately caught the dark marks scattered across his chest.
Hickeys.
Fresh. Obvious. Undeniable.
“Seriously?!” My voice rose before I could stop it. “Clyde you ditched me to get laid?”
He turned toward me, his expression flickering between guilt and panic, clearly unsure of what to say.
“I’m sooooooorry,” he dragged out. “I thought it was going to be a quicky but it turned to something else. Listen let’s go I had already packed I just came to change a shirt.”
My eyes dropped to the small bag sitting innocently on his bed, like proof that he really had planned to come — just not on time.
“Come on.”
I walked out before I said something I’d regret, and he followed quickly. We made our way down to the ground level, the quiet of the house heavy with everything unsaid. I slid into the driver’s seat and drove us home, the engine humming beneath the thick silence.
“Are you still mad?” he asked after about twenty minutes, his voice cautious.
I shook my head slowly, eyes still fixed on the road.
“I’m not.”
He sighed loudly, like he knew better.
“I know you are. I’m just really sorry Ky. I don’t know what it is with Joseph but every time I see him I just forget everything. Is this how love feels?”
I cleared my throat, my grip tightening on the steering wheel.
“Love? You’re already in love?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted softly. “I have never been loved or have loved anybody before.”
