With soft music playing low—classical strings humming beneath whispered conversations—my party officially began.
From the upper level of the house, I overlooked the living room and the grand foyer below. Crystal chandeliers glowed warmly, their reflections dancing across polished marble floors. Everyone downstairs was dressed in black, elegant and solemn in a way that felt intentional—like a silent tribute wrapped in luxury.
Ari and Caleb had secretly planned a party instead of the simple family dinner I’d expected. They’d invited friends, colleagues, people from Caleb’s world—people who looked like they belonged to boardrooms and headlines. I should’ve felt honored.
But honestly?
I wasn’t totally excited.
I had turned my closet upside down just trying to find something—anything—that could hide my growing belly. Eventually, I’d settled for a grey princess-style gown Ari had rushed to get for me at the last minute. The dress was massive. Layers upon layers of fabric pooled around my feet, dramatic and heavy, like one of those extravagant wedding dresses you see in royal documentaries.
If I was being honest, it felt ridiculous.
But today, I was a princess.
So I let it match the occasion.
“Enjoying the view?”
I turned sharply, my heart leaping before I even registered the voice.
“Babe,” I breathed, instantly wrapping my arms around him. “You made it.”
“Of course I did.”
He kissed me softly. “I arrived almost an hour ago. I was with Caleb in the study until your grandfather came and wanted to talk to him alone.”
I smiled, relief settling into my chest.
“So you guys are cool?”
He nodded, visibly relieved.
“Yes, we are.”
I kissed him again, slower this time.
“Why aren’t you downstairs with your guests?”
A short giggle escaped me.
“I don’t know half of those people, and I’m trying to avoid giving people hugs.”
That’s when his eyes dropped to my dress.
“You did a good job hiding it. I can’t even say you’re a mom.”
He chuckled.
“Well, Ari bought it. It’s just that it’s huge. It’s kind of hard walking properly without having to lift it up,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“It’s just one night. You’ll get over it soon.”
Something about the way he said that—one night—made my chest warm.
“Come on.”
He took my hand and gently led me downstairs, back into the glow of the party.
“Kyla!” Ari called the moment she spotted me.
“I’m going to look for a drink,” Zach whispered before disappearing into the crowd.
“Thank God you finally got dressed. Come on, you have to take some pictures.”
She pulled me toward the foyer where a small photography setup had been arranged.
“Where is Caleb and Grandpa?” I asked.
“I think they’re probably in the study discussing business.”
