“Good afternoon,” I began when the woman—who looked to be in her forties—opened the door. She was dressed in a crisp maid’s uniform, posture straight, hands folded neatly in front of her. Housekeeper. That was my first guess.
“Kyla Davison—oh my goodness,” she gasped, eyes widening as she opened the door wider.
I smiled shyly, suddenly very aware of my presence, of my name, of the way it still seemed to carry weight even when I wished it didn’t. “Please come in.”
I stepped into the house and immediately slowed, my gaze drifting across the space. Polished marble floors, high ceilings, neutral tones softened by gold accents—effortless elegance. The kind of home that didn’t scream wealth but whispered it confidently. Big. Beautiful. Intimidating.
“Thank you,” I said softly.
She led me to what I assumed was the living room. I sat down carefully, smoothing my skirt, trying to appear relaxed even though my stomach was already tying itself into knots.
“Would you like anything while you wait for Mrs Williams?” she asked politely.
“No thank you, ma’am. I’m fine,” I replied quickly. “I’m actually here because I want to see Naomi. Is she around?”
“Oh, are you guys friends?” she asked, tilting her head.
I nodded immediately—too quickly.
“Actually, we haven’t seen each other in a long time,” I said, forcing a casual tone. “So I wanted us to, um… catch up, you know.”
Lie number one.
She smiled wider, clearly delighted.
“She never mentioned she’s friends with Kyla Davison. Wow, I can’t believe she hid that from me.”
God, why won’t this woman just call her already so I can get this over with?
“Unfortunately, she’s not around at the moment.”
Dammit.
“Oh… what a bummer,” I said, keeping my smile intact. “Do you know when she’ll be back?”
“She usually comes back an hour after her only class on Saturday,” she explained, glancing at her watch. “Depending on whether she goes to the mall with her friends or out with her boyfriend. So she might be on her way back right now—unless I call her to find out, of course.”
“No,” I said quickly, shaking my head. “Don’t bother her. I’ll wait.”
“Very well then. Excuse me.” She disappeared deeper into the house.
I pulled my phone out immediately and texted Clyde.
Me: she’s not at home
Clyde: really?
I rolled my eyes.
Me: yeah well apparently she’s not back from school yet
Clyde: on a Saturday?
Me: I think she’s taking extra classes like some students. The housekeeper said she only has one class on Saturdays
Clyde: well I’m sorry you had to drive all that way just to find her gone Ky
Me: why are you sounding like I’m turning back?
Clyde: you’re not?
Me: of course not
Me: I didn’t come all this way for nothing
Me: I’m waiting for her
Clyde: 😄😄😄
Clyde: why am I not surprised? You’re so stubborn
