I walked to my room after seeing grandpa.
The moment I stepped away from the living room, the air felt lighter—but heavier at the same time. Downstairs, voices blended into low murmurs as they shifted seamlessly into business talk, the kind of conversation that belonged to polished suits and old money decisions. I had asked to excuse myself, blaming exhaustion, and no one questioned it.
Still, my mind refused to rest.
I wondered if he knew.
If he had noticed anything—my posture, the way I held myself, the careful way I moved. Grandpa hadn’t mentioned my pregnancy at all, not even once. Instead, he focused on the argument Caleb and I had, and on the fact that I was living on campus—something he clearly didn’t approve of. I reassured him, promised him I’d be moving back home after my first semester. He seemed satisfied with that, at least on the surface.
But his happiness… it unsettled me.
I stepped into my room and shut the door softly behind me. The space welcomed me with its muted elegance—clean lines, warm lighting, and that comforting sense of familiarity. I took off my jacket and dropped it on the chair near me, instantly feeling lighter without it.
I reached for my phone and called Zach.
He answered after the third ring.
“Hey babe.”
“Hey. Are you at home?”
He had already moved out of the apartment, and the thought still felt strange sometimes.
“Yeah, you want to come over?”
“No I’m just asking.” I sighed, sinking onto the edge of the bed.
“Are you okay?”
I could hear it immediately—the concern woven into his voice. It wrapped around me, steadying me.
“I’m fine. I just saw grandpa.”
He chuckled softly.
“Aren’t you supposed to be happy about that?”
I chortled, staring at the floor.
“I guess. It’s just that he looks so happy and that is scaring me.”
“I think you’re overthinking this. The old man is just so happy to see his grandkids.”
I giggled despite myself.
“Maybe you’re right.” I paused, then remembered. “Caleb asked me to invite you over for dinner tomorrow.”
There was a brief silence.
“Caleb? Are you sure?”
I let out a chuckle.
“Yes. To be honest I was also surprised but he looks like he’s ready to let this go.”
He scoffed lightly.
“If it took him years to forgive Ari do you think it’s possible he’s going to let this one go in a week?”
“Hey he’s trying to change. You know him very well and do you think he’d have anything to gain by hurting you?” I pressed.
“Getting his revenge on me of course.”
