The apartment felt unusually calm, the kind of calm that only came after too many emotions had already passed through the room. The TV hummed softly in the background, some random show none of us were actually watching. Clyde lounged on the couch like he owned the place, one leg stretched out, the bowl of popcorn balanced effortlessly in his hand.
“So if you two have been friends for like more than five years then how come he wasn’t at your party?” Clyde asked, tossing a handful of popcorn into his mouth.
I sighed internally before answering. Of course this would come up.
“Yeah Ky, why wasn’t I invited?” Alec added, his tone light but his eyes sharp with curiosity.
I rolled my eyes slightly, already feeling the familiar pressure of having to explain myself—again. “First of all, we weren’t talking. And secondly, I didn’t even know about a birthday party, neither did I want one. My brother and his girlfriend planned it and surprised me with it. Clyde, you know this.”
“I do,” Clyde said easily, nodding without hesitation.
Alec frowned. “Wait, you didn’t want one? You love parties though.”
I shrugged, leaning back into the couch cushions. The truth was heavier than the gesture suggested. “Things change, Alec.”
He studied me like he was trying to solve a puzzle. “I find it hard to believe you’ve changed.”
I giggled softly, though part of me felt exposed. “Never say never.”
“Never say never,” Clyde echoed, chuckling.
For a brief second, everything felt… normal. Like before. Before secrets. Before fear.
My phone vibrated in my hand.
Zach: Babe?
My heart softened instantly. I smiled without even realizing it.
Me: Hey babe ❤️
Zach: Are you okay? Is my little princess okay?
I laughed quietly under my breath.
Me: 😄 we’re okay, don’t worry.
“Boyfriend?” Alec asked, catching the blush creeping up my cheeks.
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed again.
Zach: I miss you guys.
Zach: I’m exhausted from the surgery but I still want to see you.
My chest tightened. Even tired, even drained, he still wanted us.
“Yeah… um, that’s my boyfriend texting,” I said, glancing down at my phone again. Saying it out loud felt strange—like admitting something I hadn’t fully processed myself. I wondered if Alec still pictured me the way he used to. Untouched. Innocent. Untangled.
Me: I miss you too.
Me: I have a friend over at the moment though. When were you planning on coming over?
“Oh nice,” Alec said, though something unreadable flickered across his face.
“What about you? Got a girlfriend?” Clyde asked casually.
Alec’s face flushed instantly. “Yes… um, I do, Clyde.”
“Really?” I lit up despite myself. “I wish to meet her.”
Zach: I’ll be over there in an hour.
