Kyla leaned on the balcony railing, the early morning breeze weaving through her hair like silk. The sky was painted in the soft blush of sunrise, each ray of light glinting off the frost-tipped hedges and the frozen lake below. She inhaled, letting the crisp air fill her lungs, and a wistful smile curved her lips. It reminded her of that haunting morning after Reid's end-the day her grandfather revealed his illness. She missed him terribly, but she was grateful he had lingered just long enough to meet Alexander and Ember, her little miracles. Their laughter now filled her world in a way that even sorrow could not touch.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Ember's tiny voice cut through the morning calm, and Kyla turned just in time to catch her daughter tumbling into her legs.
"Ember!" Kyla laughed, lifting her daughter with ease, pressing soft kisses against her plump cheeks. The same chubby warmth that had mirrored her grandfather's love now lived in Ember. The little girl had Zach's icy blue eyes, while Alexander-the calm, observant twin-carried Kyla's rich brown-emerald gaze.
"Good morning, sweetie."
"Mommy, I'm hungry!" Ember's insistence was joyful rather than demanding, and Kyla couldn't help but laugh.
"Isn't Stella done making breakfast?" Kyla asked, though the shake of Ember's head told her everything.
"Dad fired her," Ember said solemnly.
"What? Are you sure?" Kyla gasped, her heels clicking down the polished wooden stairs.
"Yes, Mommy. She just left," Ember confirmed, nodding gravely.
Kyla followed her daughter's gaze to the garden, and the sight took her breath away. A pristine picnic blanket was spread across the dewy lawn, surrounded by fresh flowers and morning light glinting off the glassware. Alexander's laughter echoed as he chased the small, mischievous Ember, their tiny voices mingling with the faint rustle of winter leaves.
"Happy Anniversary, my love." Zach's voice was smooth, warm. He stepped into the garden and pressed a gentle kiss to Kyla's lips, holding her gaze as if to anchor her to the present.
"Babe, you made this for us?" she whispered, astonishment softening into warmth.
He nodded, his smile effortless, confident, and entirely his own. "Yes."
They sat on the blanket, the twins tugging playfully at their parents' hands as they dug into pancakes, fresh berries, and warm croissants. Zach's gaze softened as he glanced at her, the intimacy of the moment wrapped in the aroma of baked goods and fresh air.
"Caleb called," Zach said, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. "He invited us over for dinner tonight. Apparently, he has some very good news."
"Uncle Caleb always has gifts when we visit!" Alexander bounced with delight, and Ember squealed in agreement, the twins' joy radiating like sunlight.
Kyla laughed softly, watching them scramble toward the house. "It's okay, you can spend the night... or even the weekend if you want."
"They grow up so fast, don't they?" Zach murmured, brushing his fingers through her hair as he watched the twins' chaotic delight.
"I can't believe it's been four years," she said softly, heart swelling with nostalgia. "Four years since I discovered I was carrying twins. Time... it flies when life is this beautiful."
Zach leaned in, lips brushing hers. "Being a parent is a journey like no other."
"Thank you, for doing this parent thing with me." Kyla whispered, pressing her forehead to his.
...
Later that evening, at the manor, laughter echoed through the grand halls. Kyla spotted Ari and wrapped her in a warm embrace. "I missed you so much," she said, pressing a kiss to Ari's cheek.
