All Octavia had wanted for her entire life was to be normal. At a young age, she discovered she could see things others couldn't. Scary things that used to give her nightmares but don't anymore because she's been pretending they don't exist for the majority of her life. Right now, she's trying to listen to what her roommate is blabbing on about, but this giant lizard is hanging from a tree outside. It keeps licking people as they walk by, but no one else can see it, so they brush it off like it is all in their heads.
"Octavia Reese, are you even listening to me?" Her roommate said with an annoying sigh.
She snapped her face to hers, "I'm so sorry, Tara, I'm just out of it. What were you saying?"
"I want to rush for a sorority. I thought Chi Omega, but I want you to rush with me."
"That's a no for me, dawg."
Tara grabbed her arm, and that stopped Octavia. She turned to look at her, and Tara was tearing up. "Please, Eight. You know I couldn't do this without you."
When she said her nickname, Tavi knew she was a goner. She sighed heavily. "If you are insistent, I'll do it for you."
She started grinning from ear to ear, "Great, let's go pick out our outfits."
Three hours later, their dorm room looked like a clothing store threw up in it. Tara had her dressed in a hot pink skater dress with tulle trim, chunky silver heels, and some jewelry. She curled Tavi's hair in loose waves and did dramatic makeup. While she's comfortable with what she's wearing, the makeup is a bit much. She doesn't mind wearing makeup but doesn't usually wear this much. Plus, the false eyelashes were a pain in the ass.
"You look so freaking hot, like a damn girl. If you were my type, I'd be all over you."
Tavi just snorted, "Dude, no one is your type."
She grinned at her, "And that's how I like it. There are no complications in my little Ace world. Are you ready? We need to start heading over there."
Tavi stood up and looped her arm around Tara's, "Let's go, Ace of Hearts."
"Sounds like a plan. Eight of hearts."
They walked out of their room, giggling at each other. It was beautiful. They made it to the big white house, which had what she could only describe as a bunch of living Barbies standing on the porch. Tavi looked at her roommate with her pixie haircut and pulled the end of her purple hair, which she had recently put in. They don't fit in there at all. But the girls were adorable, and the two of them made the first round of cuts.
Three nights later, they were walking back to the Chi House when Tavi saw several scary beings. She tried her best to ignore them, but one of them decided that her best friend would be his next meal, and she was not having that. Tavi pushed her towards the house and yelled, "Run, now." Then she turned to the monster and tried to get its attention. It worked; it was now chasing her. Her friend was standing there looking at her like she was crazy.
Tavi stopped and looked at her, "Ace, please. If you never listen to anything else I say, that's fine. But run, now. Please." She gave her one last look before she took off into the house. Tavi looked over her shoulder and saw it was still after her; now she had to get it to a less populated place. She took off towards the park. She was fast, even in heels, but she needed it to think it could catch her. So she didn't run at her full speed.
It was far enough away that it would still follow her, but it couldn't catch her quite yet. When she reached the park, she realized no one was around; she took a second to catch her breath. Then she picked up a stick; it wasn't the best option. It was breakable, but it'll have to do for now since it was going to be her only weapon; as soon as Tavi raised it above her head and was ready to let her war cry loose, she heard a man's voice say, "Pabo" right next to her ear. Then she saw the hottest guy she'd ever seen in her life pull an arrow off his back and shoot the monster that was chasing her right between his eyes.
