Beaumont Hamel was known as one of the bloodiest battles of the first world war, It is especially remembered in Newfoundland. It was the first and last battle for many Newfoundlanders . William Jackmen was among the first to fall on the bloody beaches, but this was not Jackmen's last appearance in the war. In fact every time Lieutenant General Hunter Weston sent troops into battle, Jackmen would appear before him and repeat "you sent them to their death, you destroyed the future of Newfoundland," over and over. Even after the war was over Jackmen tormented Weston, until Weston was driven mad, and constantly began to murmur "It wasn't my fault, I'm sorry."
