Funny enough, it turned out that they didn't need to meet up anywhere. They had all their classes together, except for one which was Virgil's spanish class. Roman was apparently fluent in it already so he chose latin for his language.
After their last class, they walked out of the school together. There was a red car in the student pick up zone that was waiting for Roman.
Roman's mother had brown hair and she wore a blue blouse. "Hello Roman, how was your day at school?" she asked, almost cartoonish.
"It was good. Mom this is Virgil, a new friend, Virgil this is my mom."
"Hello Mrs..." Virgil tried to greet.
"Princely, though you can call me Carol."
"Carol," Virgil finished.
"Hey mom, can I hang out at Virgil's house?" Roman asked.
"I'll need the address, and is it okay with his parents?" she replied.
"My uncle already said it was okay, ma'am," Virgil told her.
"So polite, alright then. What's your address?"
Virgil told her and they were soon driving away from the school. He looked out the window, still trying to get used to the new town and the roads.
"So, what do you think of this town so far?" Roman asked.
"It's not too bad, I guess. I do miss my old home though," Virgil answered. "It was a pretty small place, really comfortable and nice."
"I hope you really like it here! I've only been here for a few weeks though, so I don't know too much."
"Really? I guess you've gone out more than I have then. You seem to know this place better."
"I am an extrovert! And exploring new places is always delightful!"
Virgil couldn't decide if he found Roman's loud voice annoying or infectingly enjoyable. He hates loud kids, but Roman seems to radiate happiness.
"Oh, there's a shop in a mall that seems to be your style! I think it was called Hot Topic?"
Virgil couldn't help but laugh. "Was that the first Hot Topic you've ever seen?"
"I-I guess. I used to live in the middle of nowhere before moving here so there's a lot I'm still learning about."
"Really? I seriously wouldn't have guessed. You act like you're so used to people. Well, I guess there have been some things you're oblivious about."
"Yeah, but hey I had a brother and he used to be my friend."
"What happened to him?" Virgil couldn't help but ask.
"He ran away, but I'm sure he's fine. He didn't run away alone."
"Oh, I hope you see him again."
"I don't know if I do. I love him but man does he play rough."
"Really? For you, Muscles Mcgee?"
"Oh, so you've noticed?" Roman teased, making Virgil laugh. God it was so easy for Roman to make him laugh, he hasn't laughed like this since the accident.
Carol pulled into the driveway and Roman and Virgil climbed out.
"I'll pick you up at six!" Carol told Roman. "Have a good time!"
"Bye, thank you mom! I love you!" Roman told her.
"Love you too, sweetie!"
"Your mom seems nice," Virgil commented. "Come on, my uncle comes home at five so we have the house to ourselves for an hour."
"Do you have anything in mind that you would want to do?"
Virgil unlocked the door and opened it. "Hmm, we have a nintendo switch in the house. I could dominate you in Mario Kart."
"I've never played before but you're so on!"
"Wait, for real? You better hope you're a natural then because I'm the best there is. You can set your bag by the door."
Roman put his backpack down and then quickly took his shoes off as Virgil did the same.
"I'm a natural at most things, so you better put money where your mouth is!"
Virgil smirked. "Oh princey-"
"It's Princely."
"Whatever. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into."
"Want to make a deal?"
"I'm interested."
"Loser does the other's homework for a week."
"Oho deal!" Virgil laughed, shaking Roman's hand.
"You're going down, Virge!"
~~~
"What! How?! How?!" Roman yelled. "I was so in first place!"
"Red shell, sucker. I was saving one for the end," Virgil smiled.
"I want a rematch!"
"That would be the 5th one! Face it, you gotta do my homework~"
"Ugh fine, I am a man of my word."
"After getting your butt beat five times in a row."
"I still want to go again! Cause I'm getting better at this, and I know I can best you now!"
Virgil laughed, a genuine loud laugh that made his stomach hurt. "No one can best me! But I'm happy to prove it to you for the 6th time."
"Virgil, I'm home!" a voice called from the front.
"Uncle Patton!" Virgil greeted, surprising Patton because of how joyful Virgil sounded. "We're in the living room!"
"Great! Because I got pizza!" Patton walked in, holding two boxes of pizza. He saw Virgil sitting on the arm of the couch with a giant smile on his face and another boy sitting on a pillow on the floor.
"Nice, pizza!" Virgil cheered. "Oh, Patton this is Roman, he's a new friend. Roman, this is my Uncle Patton."
"It's nice to meet you sir," Roman greeted.
Patton faltered a bit when he saw Roman's eyes, he could have sworn they were red for a moment. He was still able to reply, "It's nice to meet you too. Virgil, can you get the plates?"
"Sure, hold on." Virgil set his controller down on the coffee table and ran to the kitchen.
Patton set the boxes down next to it before sitting on the couch.
"So, Roman, funny question but are you religious?" Patton asked.
"Yeah, I do believe in god and angels."
"What about demons and the devil?"
"Yeah, and I'm sure you believe in them too." That was all the confirmation Patton needed.
"I've met Virgil's dad and all, got a message from him recently too, and I'm sure he doesn't want his son to get hurt. But I will say this now, if Virgil gets hurt because of you then I'll make you regret it. I know how to ward off or even hurt both demons and angels alike."
Roman looked over to him, his eyes red instead of brown. "Don't worry, hurting Virgil is the last thing I want. I swear it."
"Good, because I will do whatever I can to protect my remaining family. Even if it means never getting into Heaven."
"You won't have to worry about that, protecting Virgil is my job. But befriending him is nice, he's a good kid."
"Okay, I got the plates!" Virgil said, walking back in.
"Perfect! It's pizza time!"
